2025 Spring Training Thread

It came in at 99 but doesn't that FB look like there's not much movement? Perhaps it has rise?

Command is more important than movement on a fastball. If he's locating well and doing a good job of mixing his other pitches, it doesn't really matter if it his FB is straight. So far this spring, AJ's command has been pretty terrific.

Eye test is very hard to tell how much a pitch rises. AJSS is the most interesting pitcher to see early data on this year. We only need statcast data on about 10 of his 4 seamers to determine how good that pitch is.

My biggest takeaway is that people (scouts somehow included) continue to underrate Atlanta's system. I get that it's not especially deep, and much of the talent is still in the lower levels, but the team keeps churning out quality prospects. I could easily see AJSS, Baldwin, Richie, and Caminiti becoming stars, with several others turning into solid MLB players.

FWIW the data on his FA in the minors shows it has movement very similar Lopez. If he really has 99 in the tank after 60 pitches that’s an extremely good sign.

Can’t wait to see real MLB data for him.

The shift from polished college arms with ceiling to HS arms or college arms with more risk\reward has paid off.

Even if they don't hit their 90% outcome, they have value for bullpen\trades.

Who's FB? If you're talking Didier, he does pitch up in the zone with it and it does have movement, but the draw of his 4 seamer is it's late life which makes a mid -90's FB play up.

The infatuation with him is youth, secondary pitch improvement and command (which is a thing with a few of the higher rated Braves prospects). Ritchie is an easy guy to peg as the next thing and Lara may have better overall stuff, but I like Fuentes a lot.

The clip and discussion is on AJSS

Well Strider couldn't have started much better. 7 pitches, all strikes, two strikeouts. He threw all his pitches (fastball, slider, curveball, change up) and was sitting 97+ on his fastball. Good signs!

Was just coming here to say that. Please let's have a healthy Strider the rest of his career

Amazing from Strider. Looks like he threw all 4 pitches, but not certain about the CU. 94-98 MPH on the 4-seamer. I wasn't expecting him to go more than 1 inning. It feels like they've been playing coy on how far along he is . . . I ain't mad at it.
