2025 Trade Deadline Thread

The handling of Ozuna will be looked back on as one of the biggest blunders of this trade deadline. To play him all of June with a tear just to bench him after the break when it was finally getting better had to be one of the dumbest FO/managerial decisions all season.

I mean the Rangers seem like the perfect fit for us in a trade. Both Ozuna and any one of our relievers make a lot of sense for them. We could eat money and/or take on Joc Pederson.
Yeah, TEX checks a lot of boxes. SD also has poor DH production + cash flow / luxury tax constraints that we could help with.

There's no question that the Braves have minimal leverage on an Ozuna deal, but this seems far from impossible. IIRC, TEX and SD have 80ish wRC+ production from their DH spot this year. Ozuna is a well-liked veteran player who can give you ~120 wRC+ production. If AA can't find a market for that while eating his salary it'll be frustrating. Keep grinding to make a deal, leak the agreement, and put the spotlight on Ozuna to accept or reject.

The Orioles were able to secure the Cubs top International Signee from this past signing period for Andrew Kittredge. What the eff is AA doing here? Bummer, Pierce Johnson, and Iggy all need to be out the door. I would even listen on Dylan Lee if someone really valued him highly.

RP arms are pretty easily replaceable.

already can read the comments from AA..

yeah the interest in iggy was great, we talked to a lot of clubs.. even had a deal almost done, but ultimately nothing materialized like we wanted and in the end we felt it was better for team morale to just keep him and let him finish out the contract versus giving him away for less than we wanted in return. It also allows us to negotiate a possible extension with him.

I'd try for Mason Miller if I was AA and we'd have him for the next several years.
I don't see how we would have the bodies to land him.

As for the whole scene, I am trending toward disappointment. Maybe it's Ozuna's 10/5 rights that are holding things up, but he's not coming back in 2026 so I imagine the rest of the guys in the clubhouse--while respecting his labor rights that they may also possess--are wondering how his stance helps the Braves. And, in fairness to all players, they have to look out for themselves.

An Iglesias deal will probably be done right before the deadline as a bit of a last resort for a contender that missed out on the higher-profile guys.

I think Anthopoulos is a good general manager; clearly he's in the top-third of GMs out there. That said, I think he's extremely stubborn with a healthy dose of arrogance. I've been around politicians all my adult life, so I think a bit of arrogance is a good thing. If it weren't for arrogance, the caveman community would have looked at the guy who invented the wheel as being too big for his britches and we'd all still be walking (with some of us dragging our knuckles on the ground). But I have come to the conclusion that Anthopoulos has built this team for the Acuna window and that's the blueprint for any and all decisions. As a result, we have little payroll flexibility (at least until the luxury tax is reset) and the big guns have to carry the team. Not to wax philosophical, but he's a monist in this sense and more often than not, that approach doesn't work out.

I think there are a lot of fans who cotton to Anthopoulos simply because he isn't Coppolella.

He wouldn’t be the first GM or coach to get too big for his britches after a nice run of success. Happens a lot.

It will be majorly disappointing and an absolute failure from AA if Iggy and other relievers are still on the roster at 6 pm today. And the only way Ozuna should be on the roster is if he uses his veto power.
I'm not expecting any non-Iglesias RPs to be traded today. Possible, but just doesn't seem likely.

To move Johnson and his contract, we'd need to get a clear 2026 contributor back. Replacing an RP of Johnson's caliber via free agency is likely gonna require a multi-year deal. Johnson isn't a high-impact guy, but he's been consistently productive in a world where RPs are quite volatile. Teams value that (see Tyler Rogers acquisition cost).

Bummer I'm more conflicted about, but I'd be hesitant to move him as a salary dump. He's a durable LHRP with a career xERA and FIP in the low 3s. Maybe we could replace that on a one-year FA deal, but I'm kinda reluctant to find out.
