4/29... vs brew crew

That's why I've been saying this team is not a contender currently, but if Cerberus up in the FO manages to shore up the pen and defense up until the deadline we may be a team to watch down the stretch. A World Series contender? No. But, quite possibly in contention for the 2nd WC.

If nothing changes, however, we are what a record currently says we are: a below .500 team.

Agree totally.

If we avoid those silly losing streaks again we'll at minimum get a wild card spot. if we go on a run we are easily winning the division.

Sigh. If Fredi were manager we would have never had those losing streaks. We'd at minimum be second in division if not first.

Wish we could figure out what we are. Are we a .500-ish team, or what?

Five game losing streak, five game winning streak, six game losing streak, and a four game winning streak in our last 20 games.

It's been a strange start to the season.

Yep. We would have saved all of those losing streaks for September instead.

Wrong. We will win 80-85 games IF those things happen AND the bullpen and defense stop being a liability.

The defense hasn't been a liability IMO. We had a shaky couple of games but that seems to me to be more of an anomaly. The bullpen is ok and will get better soon with Mauricio on his way back in less than a week.

I think now the question moving forward is was the offense in August/September of last year an aberration? Are we starting to see an continuation of it? If thats the case then some minor improvements to the bench and third base could result in a potential WC.

Flowers now batting .391/.481/.435. After a solid 2016 I wonder if we might have found something here. Not much power but showing solid obp skills. That goes a long way for an offensively challenged position.

If you could somehow get Moustakas on a 4 year deal next year then things get interesting. This is of course if catcher is not a long term issue and you don't have to make a splashy deal like sign Lucroy.

right now we are 2 games below .500...entirely consistent with the pre-season consensus around here regarding what kind of team we have

I am not that interested in Moose Tacoes. Flowers is going to require a significant contract if he repeats his solid 2016 over a large amount of at hate this year. Also a little worried about how effective Cabrera will be when he comes back. Hopefully I am wrong but he has never been a model of consistency. Would be a huge boost if he does. And so hope we keep Wisler in the ML pen.

Braves are going to have money to spend. The projection of amounts owed in 19 moving forward is minimal if the expectation is that young talent will continually populate the minor leagues. I'd love to have Flowers with the team for the next 3 years. HIs defense has been very good this year and he just always seems like a tough AB.

Cabrera will be asked to be a 6/7th inning man. Even with his inconsistency he will be better than 90% of pitchers are put into that same role.

Third base is the biggest hole in the organization right now. I think it will have to be answered for the next few years externally. Maybe SRod is good there next year. Even with that, the team needs to think about 19-21 as well when Maitain is finally here.

Solarte and Prado are a couple guys who might become available. They would be improve the situation at third without breaking the bank.

Solarte seems like a great answer. That would allow srod to still be a utility player next year.

And of course ssolarte is still 29 so there is some hope that his performance is sustainable moving forward.

Ideally, SRod is a bench player rather than a starter. That's not a slam on him. But he is coming off a lost season. And having a decent bench and some depth would be helpful.
