40-Man Roster Crunch

I understand your point, but you think some team is going to offer anything worthwhile for Avilan? Wouldn't we be selling extremely low on him?

His value is only going to get lower. Should've traded him last year. I think you could do a Pastornicky, Avilan, and Gattis combo and get a nice return.

Much like the Varvaro trade, I agree that Avilan's not likely to bring back much more than a potentially younger version of himself if he's dealt. That said, there are still several very good relievers available out there (Adams, Belisle, Janssen, O'Day, K-Rod, Uehara, and even J. P. Howell if they want a third LHRP) and we've got money to spend on them, so shopping him rather than Pastornicky or Jaime does seem to make more sense since he'd at least bring something back. With Shreve and Russell already in the fold, I'd imagine that they're more interested in adding talent rather than left handed talent. Adams in particular is another guy with closing experience who certainly doesn't struggle against left handed hitters - his career line against them (.217/.284/.321/.605) is almost as good as against righties (.204/.264/.323/.587).

Gotcha, thanks for that response! I guess it's possible that they would look to get a very young LH reliever that could help us in 2017 and give us another left handed pitcher, all while allowing us to create an open 40-man roster spot (which the player coming back in the trade wouldn't need since he would be so young).

My question would then be: Could we get a high-upside arm, who is already labeled as a reliever (since we certainly couldn't get any high-upside starter for just Avilan), and is a longways from being ready for the majors (since a team may be more apt to give up a nice reliever who is so far away and there is no guarantee that he'll ever make it and also we could afford to let him develop since we would really need/want him in 2017) for Avilan or even for Avilan and say a Sean Kazmar?? (Our best bet would be to find a team that is ready to compete and needs a LH reliever or lacks one in their system that is ready to step in right away, who might overpay for one that is somewhat proven)

The next to go???

Avilan trade (if there's one out there) or Ian Thomas release to clear space for Wandy or Stults.

Joey T. trade (if there's one out there) or release to clear space for Gomes.

Cunningham trade (if there's one out there) or release to clear space for KJ.

The fact that they haven't made the Gomes roster move official yet seems to indicate they are trying hard to trade someone.

Two guys I could see having some level of trade value would be Russell and Avilan. Both are made a little less useful to the Braves with the acquisition of Stults (if you assume Stults could also be a depth play for LOOGY).

I don't think guys like Jaime, Thomas, Reyes, Terdo, and Cunningham have trade value. Some of them might be claimed through waivers, but I don't think any team would make a trade of any consequence to move to the front of the line.

I don't see Stults being a depth play for LOOGY, he likely wants to stay at starter and would protest a bullpen move a la Harang. So I figure he either makes the team as a starter or goes elsewhere (possibly to AAA for a time but we'll see, he may have an out-clause for a certain date in his contract). Further, it could be they're trying hard to trade someone like say Avilan who they've talked to teams about previously. We should find out today I'd think.

@mlbbowman Mark, do you expect Gomes to be added to the roster today or could there be a trade brewing that is delaying him being added?

@jase1129 yeah, given that I've been given no reason to believe there's anything wrong w/ the physical have to think a move might be made

I don't disagree - that's the reason for the "if". That said, you never know what someone else's scouts have seen in guys like that - you've always got the International Bonus Slots that I'm quite sure we'd take for them if someone wanted them for emergency depth.

Given that I've been given no reason to believe that it hasn't, I'm convinced that a line adjacent to self-parody has been crossed.

Some are speculating about a trade of Minor but I seriously doubt that personally. It would be really selling low on Minor IMO to trade him now. Maybe later on in spring training or early in the season once he shows he is both fully healthy and back to pitching well again. And even that seems less likely than closer to the trade deadline. Further, I think it is more likely that someone like Avilan is traded as I said before. Time will tell though.

BTW, Stults did poorly pitching out of the bullpen in the past so even if he'd agree to do that job again I am not sure he'd do it well.

So Hale and Gus were both on the 40-man roster? This clears space for two of our studs to join then?
