If Jace Peterson is valued as a top 10 player based on his defense then I won't buy in all the way. Heyward was/is a fantastic defensive player. But this notion that he was top 10-20 player based on that was always absurd.

You can't have that both ways man. Either you think the defensive stats work or they don't. You can't pick and choose who you want to believe them for.

That is one that would actually have some reasonableness to it. Though, it depends on how highly you think of Miller. If you think he's a number 2 starter, then lock him up. If you think he's where his FIP levels are, then I'm not sure you want to pay what he will likely ask for.

Im not sure where it makes sense to lock up Peterson and Peraza.

I think we should go ahead and lock up all our future draft picks and top 50 prospects we flip for

BTW, AJ has the second worst DRS at -5 among catchers so far this year (see here). The only catcher worse is Rivera for Tampa Bay and he's played more than 30 more innings too. So one could argue that AJ has been the very worst considering that.

But I think it's fair to not necessarily take defensive stats at face value, but instead use them strictly to compare to other players that play that same position. For example, last year the stats showed that Heyward was the best RF in baseball. I think that's fair, because it's an apples to apples comparison. Would that mean he was better defensively then the best CF or the best SS, even if his DRS might be higher? Maybe not. Does that mean his value can be strictly computed based on those stats? Maybe not.
