Oh def—I’m just continuously surprised each time I check GameCast late, or a boxscore after, and see these ERAs in the 1s and 2s.

strand rate has been tremendous...that will normalize...but if the walks come down it should work out...i like the arms we have in the pen

Newk has likely been our best starter this year, which is way more of a surprise to me than it should be. Great job, kid!

We might be the only two people on this board this high on Fried... but I agree! Except I do still like Folty's chances as a starter.

Folty will forever be a 4 or 5. When you can't locate a fastball your ceiling as a starter or in general as a pitcher is limited. It all begins with that. Everything builds off of the fastball and when you can't hit your spots the batter doesn't have to respect it. That results in not being able to sequence pitches/locations to take advantage of hitters weaknesses.

Newk coming around maybe makes this trade a push. If he becomes a TOR starter (which is looking possible), then “maybe” this becomes a win...that’s still debatable because The guy traded was a unreal talent and the other pieces were trash. Depends if you like pitching or position players.

Hard to say this because of the leap offensively Simmons took this year. Not sure if its permanent but it is quite the development. I'm still more than happy with Newk becaues I think pitching wins but hard to compare value if Simmons is a 120 wRC+ hitter with his defense at short.

Losing Simmons' defense was tough, obviously, but the hardest part has been his offensive resurgence.

Newk's having a good season. While it's barely there getting the BB/9 under 4 is huge for him. Still....Andrelton is having a beast of a season so far. If he's figured out how to be a good hitter he will be a MVP candidate.

Might be a stretch there... Simmons has been outstanding. Simmons is at 1.8 fWAR... his team mate, trout is at 2.9 fWAR. Simmons can't be MVP when he isn't even best player on his team. Not a slight at Simmons... trout is better than everyone

I think there was a better deal out there for Simmons. The fact that Newk has come around is great and kinda lucky on our part.

I don't see it as luck. I see it as good scouting. Newk consistently is around the plate but does have the bouts of wildness for a batter or two. That is mechanical and correctable. He also has consistently yielded weak contact his entire professional career. Look at his batting average against. That is not all BABIP luck.

At this rate Trout is either on pace or close to it to set the record for WAR in a given season so year that's not fair to Simmons or any other player. 1.8 WAR at this point in the season is amazing and MVP level. Trout's 2.9 WAR is historic. Trout is better than everyone else and at worst he be #3 in WAR all-time when he retires.
