7/6 GDT: Atlanta Braves (40-43) vs. Washington Nationals (50-34); Freddie at 1B

The Mets have shown what happens when a team hitches its wagon to young SPs. All the failed SPs the Braves have produced over the last 10 years is even more evidence.

When it comes to SPs, use them up and trade them away. Cycle through them before they implode and lose all value. Fill in the blanks with FAs on 1-2 year deals.

The Rays have already shown us the blueprint.

That isn't what I said. I said TOR stuff. Folty literally has the stuff to become dominate. His head is his biggest weakness. Folty's stuff is better than every one of those other guys listed.

Medlen was dominant in 2012. Beachy had a very strong 2011. I guess stuff is in the eye of the beholder, but what those two guys showed in those two seasons far exceeded anything Folty has done so far.

I am still not sure I would do that based on one season. Just like I don't think Wood is going to get 'Ace' type money for his performance this year. I think potential has to meet production.. That is also why I said I would wait to see how Folty pans out the rest of the year. He needs to continue this run. If that is the case, then I think production has caught up with potential.. relatively speaking.

I agree it is better to base these deals on more than 1 season of production. For example, the deal we made with Ender was based on his having had two productive seasons in Arizona and 1 with us. It is a lot easier to make a deal based on that kind of track record.

It is very difficult to see how we can make deals with guys like Folty or Swanson this off-season. The lack of established track record makes it difficult for the two parties to reach consensus on the player's value. Not impossible, but very difficult. Usually one of the parties has to be willing to give up a lot to bridge the gap in these circumstances. If it is the player fine. But I don't want the club getting too far ahead of the existing track record in projecting future production.

But waiting for Folty could blow up too. If Folty finishes this year with a 3.5 or lower and we sit and do nothing and then he blows it up next year with a 3.0 or lower, then we just bought his arb years for well over arb value. Why would he take a discount, when he already knows that 2018 off season he is getting a nice raise thru the arb process.. I just think if Folty produces this year, we should strike. That means he has improved three straight years.. (still has work to do this year) plus he has the pure 'stuff' to continue to improve.. If you can get a deal close to what you said. 4- 25-30 with two team options for year 5 and 6.. this off season is the time to strike.

I agree on swanson. We probably have another year or two before we have to entertain extension talks

You are severely over estimating the money the Braves will save in his age 27-29 season, and under estimating the risk they would be taking on by guaranteeing those paydays.

Players don't give discounts for their arb years on these deals. They exchange guaranteeing projected arb salaries (taking on risk) for giving a discount for FA seasons (the upside of taking on that risk).

In Folty's case, it is not worth guaranteeing his age 27-29 seasons (assuming tons of risk) to buy his age 30-31 seasons when he will most likely already be in decline...or broken.

You are essentially suggesting the Braves give Folty the Quintana contract, but Folty hasn't done anything even remotely close to what Quintana had done at the time that extension was signed. It's too much risk, and not enough potential reward. Further, we are likely already seeing Q decline...just as pitchers tend to do.

Anyways, the Braves have done a good job on doing/skipping these extensions. I am confident they will skip this extension, as they should.
