It took an entire schedule worth of games, but Triple-A Gwinnett finally reached its goal of nabbing its first International League South Division title Monday.
Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate faced Charlotte in a winner-take-all game, in what amounted to an elimination game, with the Knights holding a half-game advantage in the standings entering the day. Right-hander Tyrell Jenkins allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings en route to Gwinnett's 6-2 win and playoff berth.
"This team had to conquer a lot of ups and downs and a lot of transactions throughout the year, and it came together all at the right time," Braves manager John Moses said. "Today was the final game and Jenkins pitched a great game for us, and that's what we needed."
After a rainout against Charlotte on Aug. 18, Gwinnett won 10 of it final 19 games -- as did its opponent -- to finish 65-78 in a down year for the South Division. Moses will take it, especially after the roller-coaster his team rode most of the season.
"The players realized what our big club was doing and they played well together despite who came into the club," the skipper said. "[Pitching coach] Mike Alvarez did a great job with the rotation and the guys we had in the bullpen, and we had to make due in a lot of games -- we had to throw guys who don't normally start and we had some contributions from some guys coming up from Double-A that helped us a great deal."

Monday's game was the shortest, time-wise (1:44) in Carolina franchise history. The Mudcats end the season with five straight wins. Edgerton had RBIs in his final 10 games, 19 total over his final 14 games.
