It took an entire schedule worth of games, but Triple-A Gwinnett finally reached its goal of nabbing its first International League South Division title Monday.
Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate faced Charlotte in a winner-take-all game, in what amounted to an elimination game, with the Knights holding a half-game advantage in the standings entering the day. Right-hander Tyrell Jenkins allowed two runs over 7 2/3 innings en route to Gwinnett's 6-2 win and playoff berth.
"This team had to conquer a lot of ups and downs and a lot of transactions throughout the year, and it came together all at the right time," Braves manager John Moses said. "Today was the final game and Jenkins pitched a great game for us, and that's what we needed."
After a rainout against Charlotte on Aug. 18, Gwinnett won 10 of it final 19 games -- as did its opponent -- to finish 65-78 in a down year for the South Division. Moses will take it, especially after the roller-coaster his team rode most of the season.
"The players realized what our big club was doing and they played well together despite who came into the club," the skipper said. "[Pitching coach] Mike Alvarez did a great job with the rotation and the guys we had in the bullpen, and we had to make due in a lot of games -- we had to throw guys who don't normally start and we had some contributions from some guys coming up from Double-A that helped us a great deal."

Monday's game was the shortest, time-wise (1:44) in Carolina franchise history. The Mudcats end the season with five straight wins. Edgerton had RBIs in his final 10 games, 19 total over his final 14 games.

END OF REGULAR SEASON!!!

Now they have Custred pitching the 9th and striking out the side. Still an impressive inning for Toussaint.

Toussaint faces six batters in relief and strikes out all six. And a future closer is born.

I certainly hope the team hasn't given up on his prospects as a starting pitcher quite yet.

It would be insane to move Touki to the BP this early in his career. Most likely it is an effort to limit his innings. He pitched 87 last year and 131 so far this year. I imagine they want to keep him under 140 innings this season.

I would guess that Toussaint's bullpen outing may be about how Rome is setting up their playoff rotation. He may be 4th in the pecking order behind Soroka, Fried, and Allard meaning he'd need an inning to stay sharp or that he may be in the bullpen for the playoffs because of the lack of need for starting pitching.

If Touki showed no signs of progression this year then yeah I could see it but he showed a lot of improvement so no big deal here, they are just gonna limit his innings.

That is exactly correct 50. I think I heard it on "THE JOCK." Nothing to see here just keeping him sharp. Although that was as dominant a 2 innings as you could have.

Am I missing something? MiLB.com says he pitched just one inning and struck out 3.

I wonder if there was an initial mistake on the box score. Now it shows Custred getting the Save and striking out all 3 of his hitters.. and on the very impressive 9 pitches.

I had Custred on my watch list last year.. 31st round pick in 2015 that had 46 Ks in like 30 innings last year. low 1 ERA between to short season teams.

He came out of the gate early and really struggled. But after a 4/29 game where he gave up 3 hits and 2 ER.. the team gave him about 10 days off.. Since returning on 5/8 he has gone 48.1 innings, 2.05 ERA, 54Ks, 27BB. He is 22, so hopefully they will start to move him more aggressively. He could be another Clouse for our pen..

Eh, I wouldn't call that winning on a technicality. He is the legitimate Southern League batting champ. That's how the rules work.

My phrasing probably came off as negative of Ozzie. He won it fair and square based on the rules. I'd just never heard of that rule before, thought it was interesting
