AJC: Braves Could Go Into Rebuild Mode, Aim Toward 2017

Baseball is a funny sport. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually score more runs this year. I don't think it's unreasonable to think CJ hits around his career average or that Andrelton can repeat his 2013 season. Freeman seemed poised for a big breakout year and I still think he can be that .300/.400/.500 hitter. Peraza could be a spark plug at the top of the lineup. Gattis could become a better hitter without the strain catching puts on his body and he could become a serviceable defender with more experience. The bench has no where to go but up.

They could magically become a better offense this year.
But having Heyward would make that hypothetical offense better than not having him.

Depending on our next move for a starting pitcher we could arguably have the best 1-5 in baseball. Thats a good start to a good team.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman reports that the Braves "might both be traded at some point this winter."

The Braves sent Jason Heyward to the Cardinals on Monday in a blockbuster deal, but Bowman says the club is "definitely not done moving some of their guys." Upton has one more year before free agency and would surely bring more in return, so he could be likelier to be moved. It appears the Braves might be gearing more towards 2017 when their new ballpark opens rather than trying to compete in 2015 with a roster that simply doesn't stack up with the Nationals.

Don’t forget 3B Chris Johnson as a #Braves trade candidate. Owed $22.5M over next three years with $10M option or $1M buyout for ’18.

Its a smart move. It should all be about being a world series team in 2017.

Can we get some big league chew for him?

Lets get after 2017! Wait, we are signing Lester, who will be paid 25 million as a 35 year old?

Yeah that was quite a call. I'm curious, what do you think of the actual package we got relative to what you were predicting. I would have been much happier with the group in your list.

Thank you sir, I would have to say in terms of the package we received compared to the one I predicted is quite even. Miller is somewhat of an established MLB starter whereas Carlos Martinez has yet to show us anything more than a late inning reliever/possible long man. Jenkins presents more upside than Kaminsky in my opinion. Was also hoping to get a replacement for Heyward in Piscotty or Grichuk.

I think the hitting coach is going to make a big difference. There has clearly been some really bad hitting coaches on the braves staff for a whole now. The evidence is in all the players who forget how to hit when they come to the Braves. Seitzer actually turned the Melk Dud into a good hitter. If he can do that for Melky why not some of our players. Chris Johnson and BJ aren't failing because of a lack of ability. They are in their physical primes. Andrelton actually had a pretty decent offensive season in 2013. One bad year and no one thinks he can get better all of a sudden? If Freeman has been this good with bad hitting coaches a good one could get him to that next level.

Take a look at the Royals offense last year. Cain had a .310 OBP. Alcides Escobar had a .259 OBP. Gordon had a .327 OBP. What magic beans did they eat.

I think hitting coaches have more potential for doing harm than good. For every one player they truly help they probably screw up 10.

Please get rid of CJ. I could case less if we just get a fringe prospect for him. He's useless
