Fredi running his mouth after the game was inexcusable. I think it shows that there's a rift between Fredi and Hart as some writers have alleged. Managers almost never come right out and say they're trying to trade someone still on the roster absent some extraordinary circumstance. But Fredi seems to have gotten a little butt hurt from being told to pull Callaspo from the lineup and from the front office trying to trade one of his favorite players so he didn't feel the need to keep his mouth shut.
This could turn into a bad situation. Fredi enjoys the support of JS and Cox at this point and both those guys have a lot of pull in this organization but little stunts like that will see Fredi's support erode quickly.
As for Callaspo, good riddance. I didn't like the move when we made it. Callaspo had been in sharp decline for two straight seasons. He was on the wrong side of 30 so his decline was likely age related and not something that could be easily fixed. Giving him $3 million guaranteed with another million in incentives was, while not a ton of money, way overpaying for Callaspo at this point. If I was the GM I'd have released him the second he showed up for Spring Training overweight and out of shape.
Personally, I don't understand why another team would want to take him on. Callaspo can't hit and is, at best, an average fielder at this point. There's no shortage of slick fielding infielders who could give you excellent defense with Mendoza line hitting. The only reason Callaspo rates a $3 million contract while those guys languish in AAA is because Callaspo was a decent major leaguer for a couple years with the Angels. Unfortunately those days are gone and never coming back.
