Around Baseball 2015 Edition

Funny how a few of the hey ward haters are changing their tune on how they speak of him

It was bound to happen, he's a good ball player. I'm still wondering what happened with his walks though. Except that seemingly pitchers are throwing more balls in the zone to him than before. Probably a benefit of playing on the Cardinals.

Steven Matz--Exhibit A as to why DH in the NL needs to be dropped. If you are an athlete you should be coordinated enough to at least put bat on ball. His Dad brought him up hitting and it showed. Need to bring kids up as all-round athletes. Like we did when I was in school. Baseball in the Spring, football in the Fall, basketball inbetween just to stay in shape. I believe it would cut down on elbow blowouts as well.

Eh. Let's call it a hunch, I severely doubt he hits very well. OVer the last 30 years. Pitchers with at least 500 PA, 2 had a wRC+ over 50. Mike Hampton and Carlos Zambrano. Pitchers aren't good hitters. Matz got 3 balls just to get hit. One just over Phillips, one just past Hamilton, and one on a hit and run that would have otherwise been a routine groundout. Let's not act like Micah Owings coming up and hitting the snot out of the ball. This is a kid who did very well, he will hardly be the exception. I agree with you on mulitple sports, but I would never let a kid play football. It should be baseball in the spring, soccer in the fall, basketball in the winter. Soccer is way better for a pitcher.

Small sample, but his minor league OPS of .423 doesn't suggest he's going to be a slugger.

He still made contact. That's the important thing for a pitcher. In my day, soccer had very little foot hold in the mountains. Besides strapping on a helmet on Friday toughens you. If you practice proper tackling technique the chances of getting seriously hurt are minimal.

Though Steven Matz's grandfather reaction gif is a great present to the internet

Hard to miss Heyward when you watch a bona fide ace like Miller pitch and realize you get to watch it at least for the next three years at least. Miller is the first true ace we have had since Huddy in his prime.

We did good getting Miller no doubt. I miss Heyward and all, did not want him to leave (edit: forced or otherwise). But I don't think I'd have been happy watching him fail to reach his ceiling while making superstar money either.

Hate the DH, just hate it.
