Around Baseball Offseason Edition - Derek Jeter will retire at seasons end

Especially Puig. That guy has had two good months due largely to a massively inflated BABIP. At least Harper has basically played two full seasons.

Agreed—and I think the players are pretty on-the-mark with both selections, since I do think that, combined, Harper and Puig represent about 50% of all overratedness in MLB.

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN and SiriusXM, Max Scherzer wants an eight-year deal from the Tigers.
And the Tigers offered him six years at $144 million. The two sides have cut off talks and might not reopen them until the end of the 2014 season -- if at all. Scherzer deserves to cash in big after winning American League Cy Young Award honors last season. And he will cash in big if he repeats his numbers from 2013 and then hits the open market.

Well then.

You can't put a price on the excitement both players bring to the game!!

I remember someone talking about how overhyped Jason Heyward was back in 2010 in defense of the hype Harper and Puig are getting now but Heyward never got this kind of hype in 2010. He wasn't on every MLB commercial every time you turned the channel. ESPN wasn't doing a special segment on Heyward every time you turned on the channel or went to the website. The hype Heyward got back in 2010 is not even in the same stratosphere of what Harper and Puig get now.

Puig I can see. He is BABIP regression waiting to happen. Harper on the hand has actually produced and is sitting at 5.67 bWAR/5.2 fWAR per 162 games played. Now maybe that's good enough when compared to what Trout is doing, which is unprecedented, but I doubt many players have done what Harper has at ages 19 and 20.

edit: Just looked it up on fangraphs leaderboards

Harper is 4th in WAR for someones combined 19 and 20 aged seasons

Ott - 12
Cobb - 10.8
Mantle - 8.8
Harper - 8.3

Pretty good company.

Harper is going to be good. Probably REALLY good. I think the overrated tag is backlash from the fact that he's gotten attention from the media commensurate with, say, Mike Trout, but hasn't yet put up an eyepopping year like Trout has. His age-20 season was very comparable to Jason Heyward's. He's good, he's precocious, but he isn't an elite player yet.

Everything bad in baseball stems from the Worldwide Leader.

There's a difference between overrated and overhyped. At least in my book. Harper is not overrated because he is a very good player who has only scratched the surface of what his peak will be. But he's greatly overhyped because he's not that player yet.

I dont think hes overrated, he's a hell of a player, i'd take him on the Braves.

But when people compare him to Trout is when it gets overrated.

Trout is the best player in baseball, doesnt have many weakness'

I would take him on the Braves as well. I love the way Bryce Harper plays. I hate that he's on the Nationals but I respect Harper's game.

I think you don't know the meaning of the word overrated.

For example Derek Jeter is overrated. He's a great player, first ballot hall of famer, blah blah blah, but he's absolutely overrated by most. Players can be great and can still be overrated. Overhyped may be the more apt phrase fitting harper, but this shoe fits. Though personally I think Puig is hands down the most overrated player in baseball. the guy finished top 15 in MVP despite only playing 100 games.

Why, because he should be 2nd on the list?

I'd rate him in the 3-5 range, based on what he's actually done in his career so far—but either way, his putative greatness is still a lot more projection than prior reality at this point, and yet so many are so ready to announce him not just best LF, but one of the best players in the game. He's simply not there yet.

I guess you could argue Holliday was slightly better last year, but his overall trend should be down, while Harpers should be up.

But, you want to suggest, he may be similar or inferior to Gordon, Choo, Upton?

His wOBA last year was .371. Probably safe to assume .380 as a benchmark this year? (Oliver has .389, Zips .382) That is likely in the top 5 for all outfielders in baseball.

That list isn't rating players on what they have done in the past. It's guessing what they will do in 2014.
