Around Baseball

I didn't see last nights game, but I'd wonder if it was more dominant than Randy Johnson's game against us. Was that one a perfect game or just a NH?

I think you're both about 80 percent wrong. I'd bet the history of of the Yankees and getting to play in that stadium means more to him than the extra money they were will to pay him.

Btw, he looks to have lost some weight and looks pretty good clean shaven and in pin stripes. Hit a triple and a HR today. Maybe he likes it up there.

And I think you are 100 percent wrong on that. These guys no matter what they say play for one reason the MONEY. Mac is a prime example and proves my point. He is a mid career guy, already made more money than he or the next three generations of his family will ever need. Playing at home with a young family would seem to me would trump the amount of money. The Braves certainly would have made him a fair offer. I will never understand why these guys will squezze every penny out of these contracts in today's game. I understand it in the early days of free agency but not now. Mac brings to mind another guy who regretted the decision to leave the Braves almost from the minute he signed the contract, Tom Glavine. If you believe JS book, there was actually talk of trying to recend the contract and return to the Braves for the what was it? The '03 season?

Mac is probably in the same boat.

.

If that was true he would be dead to me. Nothing I hate more than players who worship at the altar of the yankees. Except Goodell. He is #1, 2, and 5 on my **** list.

Im not sure if you realize this, but McCann could go down tomorrow. He may have 50 more years to live, how's he going to make any money after baseball? Let them do what every other rational human does and takes the most money they can make.

He's earned his money and there should be no one crying that he took that money from another team when the Braves wouldn't offer him the same thing.

I am just not money hungry I guess. If I had been blessed to be a ballplayer it wouldn't have been about the most money. It would have been about where I was happy. Not how many zeros were on my check. And really if you live a modest wealthy lifestyle do you really know the difference between 5 million and 10? I highly doubt it.

I'd certainly take the most money possible. Unless the difference between the 2 wasn't much like say the Braves offered 5/70 and the Yankees offered 5/75 I would go with the Braves.

That being said, I doubt we even made a serious offer to Brian. I seriously think we didn't.

Good Lord...with that kind of money???? What's life after baseball? With whathe has already banked he shouldn't have to work a day in his life.

The difference is more than you think. I wouldn't probably go for as much as possible but I bet the difference between the Yankees and Braves offer was huge.

I am the same way. I don't have a problem with players being all about the money so long as they admit it. When a player turns down 100 million then says "well I gotta make sure I can feed my family" I get pissed.

Also former players can get other jobs in baseball that might not pay millions a year but still do well. I have a friend of a friend that was a former #1 prospect for the Astros but busted pretty hard in the majors and is now a scout for the cardinals. When Brian retires there are any number of teams that would hire him for some role. Its not like former players only option are bagging groceries.

No doubt, but his finanical securitiy was taken care of by the last contract. This was just a money grab. Were I in shoes as long as there was an offer made I would still be a Brave unless there was some ill will.

You have no clue what decision you would have made. YOu are making the decision as someone that makes a modest living. I have no clue how well you do for yourself so 5 million to you is more than what it is to Mac.

Once you start making money, you start spending more money. Its not like Mac is living in a 300K house.

And now...

You might be right about Mac, but not about me. Once I wore that uni I would not have taken it off until retirement. And yes I know what decision I would have made.

I'm with Zito, I'd like to think if contracts were at least in the same ballpark I'd stay with the Braves. But if the yanks threw that much more money at me, as bad as it would hurt I'd take the money. We probably weren't even close to what the yanks offered. Also I don't think the fact it was the yanks had anything to do with it. If the dbacks would have offered him that contract he'd be sweating his ass off in the desert.
