Around Baseball

LOL at the Nationals. What the hell are they doing this year? Just a miserable year that is nothing short of a complete failure.

Hard to feel bad for a club who has one great year and thinks they are world beaters now, but I kinda do feel bad for them. HORRIBLE season.

Nate McLouth is having a really solid year. Already has 28 SBs. I didn't think he could be fixed. Maybe there's hope for BJ too.

I thought the trade for McLouth was great and couldn't believe how awfully he played. Maybe those injuries were worse than he let on.

He's been pretty bad outside of his insane April (346 avg with a 964 OPS) and a good July (287 avg with a 770 OPS).

Take out those 2 months and hes hitting 236 with a 658 OPS.

If they end up getting something for him, what is the issue?

So, they pick up DeJesus, release Bernadina, and now are looking to see if they can get something for DeJesus? That makes sense, but I HIGHLY doubt they get much in return for DeJesus and thats a risk I wouldnt take with the contract he has.

Worst case scenario they are out 2.5 million dollars.

Why, bc they could lose 2.5 million dollars?

The acquisition all the way around just makes no sense. Bernadina has had a bad season, but is a good 4th OF as shown the last few years with them. They release him to pickup DeJesus, who now they are looking to trade again? Add on top of that, the Nats are pretty much out of it. I shouldnt have said stupid move, but an unnecessary one. If they are going to keep DeJesus for next season, okay, I can see that, but paying him that much money to be a 4th OF is kinda nuts. If they are going to pay 2.5 to buy him out, why not just hold onto the Shark and get rid of him after the year? Much cheaper.

Last but not least, if they turn him around and get a good prospect out of him, then I will applaud the Nats...just seems highly unlikely and highly unnecessary.

It may end up being an unneccasary move, but the only risk is losing 2.5 million dollars. Dropping Bernadina means nothing, he's gone at the end of the year either way.

So, they either:

Get something of value for him
Lose 2.5 million
Keep him as 4th OFer next year for 6.5 million.

Being that money really isn't much of a concern for them due to Lerners pockets, it's not stupid move, but could certainly just be a waste of time.

Ok true..bottom line is if Braves were in the Nats position, and Wren made a move like this, Id question it big time. Even if the Braves had no money concerns, and especially bc ive read a few reports where it could have been a mistake(waiver claim on him). Wut? Rizzo and the Nats as a whole arent handling the pressure so far.

The mistake just appears to be message board speculation. You don't mistakenly put in a claim on a player. Dejesus is a guy they've been after for a couple months.

"DeJesus is an expensive upgrade for the Nationals and their struggling bench but shows a willingness by the front office to still push for this season while planning for next."

So..first it was they are wanting to flip this move and see if they can get something good for him, and now its a move to show they are still pushing for this season and planning for next by throwing 6.5 million dollars for a 4th OF? I dont see how this is a good thing..period. Im sorry. Harper is your LF and Werth is your RF. Span is struggling and what they would be smart doing is getting a 4th OF that hits RH good so he could platoon with Span. Not getting an expensive 4th OF who sucks just as bad at hitting LHP. Whatever though. Nats do no wrong in your book, but its def a move I would not like if it were the Braves doing it.

Agree to disagree.

I have no idea what you are even talking about. I said they claimed him and they put him on waivers to leave open the opportunity to trade him if another option comes up. If not, they decide whether to pay 1.5 million or pick up his 6.5 million dollar option.

He's a solid player that can back up CF. he's expensive, but they have money to spend. I hate carrying 5 OFer, but they have the option of carrying Hairston and Dejuses, one that can hit righties and one that can hit lefties.

It's such a minor move, you are just saying it's a bad move just to say it.

You have to admit though, $2.5 million for a backup OF on a team that's 16 games out of first (for the last 30 some odd games in a season) doesn't really equate. Seems like you would give that chance to a random minor leaguer.

Also, FWIW, this isn't just message board speculation:

Im saying its a bad move because it was a bad move. Nats season is done. If Nats have money, that can spend it in the offseason on a much better option than DeJesus. Yes, its a minor move and yet another reason why its a bad move. Whats the point of it? I see no point other than throwing away money. They gave up on Bernadina too quick and that has something to do with my opinion. Its also a move that if Wren made it, I would be questioning it the same way im questioning the Nats. Im not questioning the Nats for the heck of it. They are a rival team who were hyped up so much going into the season, so yes, its been fun seeing them choke under pressure, but I applaud them for a lot of moves they make, but this isnt one of them.

I have no idea what you are even talking about other than defending the Nats, once again, no matter what they do. Ive always given the Nats props when they deserve it, but this move IS questionable and im questioning it. Whats wrong with that??? Im sorry your Nats suck ass cheeks. Not my problem. I just call it like it is.

This move may not be just for this year, they could carry him next year if they want to. Thinking trading for a CFer when 10 games back of the wild card will make a difference is silly, but the worst case for them is they cost themselves 2.5 million. bc they decide not to bring him back.

As for Rosenthal/Olney, it's amazing to me after all these years that people still don't understand the waiver wire process. I remember Andruw Jones being put on waivers and the speculation that he was going to be traded. Teams put players on waivers all the time to leave options open. I bet a lot of the Braves were put on waivers as they usually are.
