Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Rays are about to sign a new TV deal that should boost their TV revenue from $35M in 2017 to $50M in 2018, and then increase over the next 14 years to $80M+ per year.

It will be interesting to see how much of that extra $15M in revenue is passed along as increased payroll in 2019.

It's unlikely but I really hope the Braves can get a new TV deal before that bubble busts.

In 2013 the talk was about how the Braves TV deal ran through 2027, and only paid them $10M-$20M per year. They then sold 45 Peachtree games per year to Fox for something around ~$40M per year. That brings their total TV revenue into the $50M-$60M range.

That is right in the neighborhood of what the Cards get in their $1B contract over 15 years (~$66M per year).

The Phillies get ~$100M per year from their 25 years $2.5B contract.

I would expect the Braves to really be "worth" something between those 2 values, but they aren't doing too badly.

White Sox 3B prospect Burger just ruptured his Achilles and will miss all of 2018. That means he won't be ready for MLB until 2020 at the very earliest, and probably later.

I wonder if this makes them more likely to sign Mous to a bargain deal?

How does a pro athlete ever let himself get that fat? Its your business to be in shape.

I imagine if you spent your whole life toiling away at sports, and then became so rich it no longer mattered what you did, it might be tempting to say "screw it".

If I suddenly came upon $10M I sure as hell wouldn't continue learning every new software technology to keep my skills "in shape".
