Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

Hamels buyout is only vesting if he pitches like 250 innings this year. So extremely unlikely he will have a buyout attached to him. He'll be a FA with no money owed in all likelihood.

I think the idiot Phillies snagged the only guy that will end up being something. What hurts the worst are the guys we will be unable to get going forward. For all of the hoopla...the class of guys we signed have been disappointing so far.

Since there is no official 2018 minor league thread, thought the next best place to stick this nugget would be here:

Rangers farm is bleak, and dont have much pitching in their farm or ML team.

I'd give up a good bit for Mazara.

me too. left handed power.

Dansby plus some pitching. Move Albies to SS. Sign Dozier for 2B.

If we strike out on on the major FA like I think we will get Mazara + Choo if you can get him for a low return. Then just eat the 40 million. Braves are used to having 20 million of dead money at this point.

Ah Shanks, the village idiot. Why would he assume Soroka was in the package just because he’s from Canada?

Would've only had to make a couple more deals to make it happen - I'd imagine if Coppy could have juggled things and packaged Soroka with Votto it could've happened - that would've been TWO Canadians!!!

A very telling stat about age in baseball

"The only players in their age-36 or older season who have played in even 30 games this season are Nelson Cruz, Rajai Davis, Ian Kinsler and Albert Pujols."

The game is changing. With the average fastball velocity skyrocketing you aren't seeing as many older hitters because they simply can't catch up to it anymore on average. We saw a perfect example of that with Bautista. It's also why players like Matt Holliday are still free agents. The next big casualty will be Paul Goldshmidt who doesn't have a hit on anything 96+ this year.
