Around the League 2020 Edition

Not as bad as I thought and pretty much confirms the financial wasteland in MLB post COVID.
Good pick up for the Jays although his age 33 season and beyond can really become a problem if he declines rapidly.

6/150 is about what you'd expect for Springer even in a normal year. He's been an elite player at times, and while he's a solid defensive CFer, he's probably gonna have to move to a corner spot in the next couple of years. Plus he's 31 and will be 32 before the end of the season.

Honestly, considering the COVID market, I thought he might have to accept something around 5/125 with an opt out after year 2. So 6/150 I think is good for him.

The more we see, it really looks like the main changes have simply blown up the markets for marginal players and older players - and those changes are welcome, even from most of the fans that aren't statheads. I think most fans are finally understanding that Pitcher contracts need to be shorter because of the heightened chances of significant injuries and that players getting into their mid-30s simply aren't likely going to maintain their levels of production whether they're fan-favorites or not.

As front offices continue to get better at trimming the fat around the edges, I don't think a deal from legitimate contenders for guys like Springer/Realmuto/Freeman/Ozuna are terrible ideas - as long as you're not stuck with contracts for guys like Ender - if you get 4 seasons with production that's relatively similar to what you've been seeing from them...call that last season when they begin to steeply decline a "winners' premium".

Padres about to go 3/21 on Profar?

Just going by bref, that would push them over 160m. And significantly more than that in 2022.

How much money do they have this year? Preller is behaving recklessly, IMO.

Even during the COVID off-season, dumb teams still find ways to spend recklessly. The difference seems to be that the traditional big market teams like Boston, NYY, LAD, and the Cubs are mostly staying out of this market.

Preller is making the same mistakes he did during the last rebuild. We'll see if it pans out or not with a different talent pool.

Preller isn’t making the same mistakes. He has a very young team that he is filling out with FA additions. Their biggest problem is that horrible Myers contract and getting Tatis extended.

If it’s such a bad contract for the team, why in the world would he opt out?

Because they are paying the worst part the next 2 years. 20+ million per. Then he can opt out or get paid like 12-13 million per. If he is somewhat productive he could opt out for a little higher Per.

Then at that point it’s no longer a bad contact for the team and they wouldn’t hope he opts out.
