Around the League 2020 Edition

Always funny when folks mention the unbelievably lucky trades to make a point. The report on Tatis 11 months before he was traded was...

In their scouting report, MLB.com said, “Scouts like Tatis Jr.’s swing, his strong arm and his fluid actions on defense. He’s shown decent arm strength and raw power to his pull side. Tatis Jr.’s knack for barreling up balls and his repeatable swing have also impressed evaluators.” Jeff Buchanan of FutureSox wrote, “Tatis clearly doesn’t have the same upside as [White Sox top 2015 international signing] Franklin Reyes, but his well-rounded skillset, high baseball IQ and professional mentality mean he likely comes with less risk than Reyes and is a better bet to maximize his potential as a possible everyday player.”

What part of "potential everyday player" screams superfreak? Evaluators had him behind Franklin Reyes - whoever the *ell that is. FWIW, he was ranked #30 in that international signing class - well behind Moancada, Vlad Jr., Soto, and Pache.

I think it’s hilarious that you took that post that seriously. There was no “point” trying to be made.

I will say though that the Phillies have largely managed their payroll advantage well. They've managed to move around pieces effectively and haven't "capped" themselves out.

couldn’t disagree more here.
they’re lucky they were able to get out of that Santana contract. that was such a dumb signing for them as he had no where to play. it helped make their defense one of the worst we’ve seen.

Arrieta was also a poor signing. an older pitcher who was clearly on the downside and they blinked and signed him.

they’ve overall done a pretty bad job building a team for the present and future. their roster going into last year was a joke. ignore the fact that they signed expensive relievers in the first place and all of them got hurt, their bench was a joke and Maikel Franco was plan A at 3B, and Nick Williams and Aaron Altherr were their main bench pieces. and then you had their rotation which they didn’t address at all going into that season.

they’re going to have to pay Hoskins soon or let him walk. JTR is going to command a lot of $$. Harper is signed until he’s 39. Kingery isn’t good and is already signed. another decline year of Andrew McCutchen. Wheeler is good, but 4 more years with him at high dollars. they’re going to have a lot of them because they don’t have particularly strong young players and their farm is below average. so they’re going to have pay a lot of players a lot of money to be competitive.

i’m curious how it can be argued that they’ve spent well.

Curious what they do with JT, not sure who his agent is but he'll be 30 and catchers dont age well but NL DH helps. But he is an athletic catcher, so i think he'll be ok. Even in this market, he wont be short of suitors. Arrieta comes off the books this winter, but JTR is due a massive deal. Hoskins isnt due for 3 more years i think.

Looking at their 2021 payroll, assuming they decline some options, plus arb guys, they're about 140-150 mil or so without JT on the books.

I dont think they've done terrible with their financial advantage but they sure could have done better, to be sure.

Our boy Heyward finally living up to his potential at age 31.

DAFUQ is going on in 2020? He legit is having a breakout year. Everything about his stats suggest what he's doing is legitimate. At age 31 with career .760 OPS lol. Strange.

He actually trended up in the power dept last year. But this is like 2012 power with 2010 patience.

I'll just add that now that Bohm and Spencer Howard are on the major league team, they literally have one of the worst minor league systems by far. So help isn't on the way and they will need money to patch holes. That Mickey Moniak #1 pick turned out horrible. And they gave their top pitching prospect Sixto Sanchez to the Marlins for JT. Kingery was supposed to turn into a star for them and he appears to have taken a huge step back.

Good point on Bohm and Howard. Medina is the closest guy they have near ready, everyone else is projected to be near 22-24. If they kept Sixto, a top rotation of Nola, Wheeler, Howard, Eflin and Sanchez is actually pretty nasty. I suppose they could always just sign a free agent too, but they werent even getting to the luxury tax this year, and who knows what happens this winter even with them with the money drop happening league wide.

yup. and for their sake, both of those guys better work out.
i think they rushed Kingery after they gave him a deal. then they didn't give him a set position. he sorta lucked into a good year last year but has been a disaster this season.

JTR hit to a 108wRC+ last year. he's a great catcher, but as soon as he isn't great defensively, his value drops big time. do you want to pay a guy $25M to be a 110wRC+ DH?

didn't realize they still had 3 arb years with Hoskins. his arb numbers will prob be high based on his offense tho, and his defense isn't going to improve. he's solid but he's a 2-3 WAR 1B it seems. meh.

The Yankees have been ravaged by injuries. I don’t feel the least bit bad about that either. At full strength they are on of the better teams in the game. Not much competition for the 8th spot. Seattle, Baltimore, and Detroit along with the Yankees.

Its amazing those playoff odds in the AL. Yankees at 90%, Orioles 2 games back at 8%. Literally anything can happen in 20 games. That's just weird.

Well, one's at a +9 RD, the other's at -8. Plus preseason predictions feed into it.

But yea, it certainly does look weird.

I wasn't trying to say that they had spent their money wisely to date, I was saying that they have done a reasonably good job of not capping themselves out.

Under normal circumstances, they would have plenty of room to add players this offseason.
