I guess what we learned is that we all underestimated the strength of our core talent (even without Acuna).
The pitching is carrying us and its only going to get better.
I think that is a little far. We have a good team.
What we underestimated is that we are on a super easy schedule and the Mets are on a super hard schedule. Philly got to the front of the line going on a long winning streak against not the best competition.
We could fall back down to earth after we start running through the Dodgers, Giants, etc.
Riley and Swanson have been amazing. Having a competent C is amazing. Almonte is a replacement level player in non-stat version of the word and having solid vets in the OF is a HUGE upgrade.
I still don't think anyone would pick us to win a series at this point.
We are beating teams we were losing to before.
True. But most of that is the deadline. We took Duvall off the Marlins so he could stop beating us. We added a good right handed RP. We replaced the entire outfield with players that are considered above replacement level. Our OF was actually doing well, IMO, considering they were actually replacement players.
That's not our core. Riley and Swanson are hot after the break, but I'm not sure I'd say it's our core as much as our improvements.

At current strength I like our chances against the Brewers or even the Giants. It just seems to me like both teams have too many guys playing over their heads. And to be fair we probably have a few as well, but I certainly don't see either of those as being anything other than competitive series.
The road to the World Series still runs through Chavez Ravine.
Nobody is beating the dodgers. Just loaded.
I wouldn't say that just yet. As of right now, they could be bounced by losing 1 game.

Fair point - I think they end up winning the division.
Its hard for me to believe the Giants are real still.
What folks were underestimating was just how bad the poor luck was earlier in the year, and how many wins it stole from the team.
What folks are overestimating now is how much the luck has shifted during this good stretch.
The Braves have two back to back off days next week? I don't think I've ever seen that before
Overall I think the season is pretty close to evening out regarding the luck.
Fangraphs had the Braves pegged for 88 wins at the start of the year. The Braves current pace puts them at 87 wins. However the team does seem to be on an upward trajectory at the moment.
Losing Acuna has sucked. But Swanson and Riley hitting as well as they have in the 2nd half plus Joc, Duvall, and Soler coming over have done a good job of "replacing" his offense.
The Giants are definitely real. The analytics are working.
“Analytics”. That’s what we’re calling it now, huh?
