There are certainly scenarios where opt outs can mutually benefit a team down the line, though I think it's pretty clear the opt out is completely in the player's favor when they are signed. If I'm the Nats, I thank him for his services and I happily let him walk.

Letting Stras walk wouldnt be smart at all for the Nats unless they used that money to keep Rendon and sign Cole or someone.

Seems like this is just a leverage move by Stras agents to get more years tacked on the deal from the Nats.

I'd assume so but Stras would have a hot market if he decided to test FA. Minus Cole, it's a fairly weak FA SP market.

Not saying opt outs are always good. But him opting out might be good for the sand fleas. Not Paying a 31 year old pitcher with numerous injuries another 100 million over 4 years could be a blessing in disguise. Let another team pony up more money for Stras decline years.

He has a 6 WAR, on pace for 200 innings, 200 K's, good WHIP/FIP, every pitching stat you wanna use. Maybe he declines hard but him leaving would be a massive blow to them unless they went after Cole.

Cool moment in the Marlins and Pirates game.

First time ever a brother tandem has faced off against another as pitcher vs. Batter.

Ended with a strike out on a full count looking.

Huh? Phil and Joe Niekro had to have faced eachother at least a few dozen times in their careers.

That's true but I think we're starting to see the market for 30+ year old players isn't as secure as it was just a few years ago.

Never said he wasn’t have an incredible year. I also think he has incredible stuff. I just personally think he is fragile and will struggle in his 30’s. I hope he does stay or better yet the gnats restructure his contract to pay him more. Maybe I am wrong. But his track record tells me he should be valued as a 3 to 3.5 war pitcher not a 5 or 6 that he might get paid for.

Kimbrel just aint what he used to be, it's the truth. AA dodged a bullet not getting him for multiple years.

Not saying you're wrong, but i dont see how letting him go makes Washington better in the short or long-term. But i get your argument, long-term deals with pitchers is generally risky.
