Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Mike ford.

Just to clarify - the Braves are not a big-market team. They're far from "broke", but constantly claiming everybody else's trash and juggling your 40-Man Roster to make that trash fit will certainly help get you there in a hurry - not to mention ruffle the feathers of those controlling the purse strings.

Unlike fantasy baseball, there is actually a cost for doing this - and that cost more than doubled under the new CBA. Every waiver claim now costs $50,000.

Who are you going to trade the Cubs (plus take on Frazier's $1.5 million guaranteed salary) to keep him from making it to waivers???

You should let AA know this is a bad use of resources... he's claimed 3 guys (dunand, Robertson, and ford) since June 1st. Dunand is already gone.

I really don't care about this. I think between Frazier and ford that Frazier would have a better chance of actually helping the team. That "better chance" is still very small though. I have no idea how ford could help this team unless Olson gets hurt... there's no way he starts at DH with ozuna, Contreras, and Acuna. If the stars somehow aligned for fraizer, he could play in LF. Again, doubtful, but I could at least squint my eyes enough to see that. I can't see a place for ford

I doubt another outfielder is acquired before the deadline.

It’s either going to be a stud starting pitcher or more likely another bullpen arm. I don’t see the space for anything other than a bat on the bench. Harris looks like the real deal and we have lots of options internally on the roster for Lf now.

There is certainly a future version of reality where Duvall/Rosario/Ozuna adequately cover LF/DH and another OF isn't needed. However, there are many more possible universes where those guys are still bad, or Harris doesn't adjust well to whatever new strategies opposing pitchers are about to try on him, or someone gets hurt.

My money is still on AA needing an OF at the deadline.

Can't believe AA used Pache to get someone useful. He has a 27 wrc+

Glad AA kept Harris out of the deal. Made moving Pache more possible. I think Shea and the pitchers were more what the A's wanted but they've always liked players like Pache.

Contreras > Langeliers. Some may disagree but AA made the right move keeping Harris and Contreras. Time will tell on Lango but we knew Contreras could hit.

Still amazes me that we have young guys like Fried/Swanson/Riley/acuna/Ozzie/Minter/Anderson and others that have come up and already been major pieces to one title run. And we now have young guys like Wright/strider/Contreras/ and Harris2 that we are all excited about for hopefully our next run. Oh Soroka too.

To be fair. Wright was huge in the World Series last year.

I think AA will want Duvall/Rosario/Ozuna to handle it. He signed a lot of money into that LF platoon.

My current day dream is a deal with the Royals. I still think waters is an overpay. But the Royals seem to be a team that wants to have some vets over there and they are only paying Perez. What if the Royals took Ozuna to have a DH, play Dozier at 1B and maybe have a vet that they can flip when his hard hit rate turns into results. Braves take back Santana this year to help offset this year's money.

Maybe Merrifield + Santana for Waters, Ozuna, and Muller and Elder. I doubt they'd take on Ozuna. But maybe. If I was a Royals fan, I'd be interested in the deal. I know I'm going nowhere but I can dream on Waters and Muller. Elder is a fifth starter for cheap. Ozuna isn't my money and I know my team isn't spending money anyway. If he keeps hitting the ball hard, maybe we can flip him. 2 years on the deal after this year isn't horrid.

I like Waters more than most and I don't want to lose him in a salary dump. BUT you get a guy in Merrifeld who can play all over the diamond, you get rid of an abuser and you free up a ton of money next year when there are some guys worth spending money on available.

I'd agree. I'm surprised how many are impact guys. We just don't seem to get any Mallex Smith's these days, 1 WAR guys who stick around while they are cheap. Seems like they are impact guys or total busts for the most part.

We also have gone through two GMs where we prioritize pitching, especially with early picks. Right now you are looking at CF, RF, 3B, SS (counting Dansby b/c we got him so early), 2B, a C with Contreras are home grown and impact players IMO. Pretty remarkable. Maybe Harris will just end up as inciarte, which is valuable but not an impact guy. Still really good.

To be fair Pache might have been just a toss in on that deal.

I don't think so. I think pache was a big part of the deal.

I think the fact that Pache couldn't hit is the reason we need Lango and Cusik in the deal. I thought we overpaid but we did give up flawed guys. Pache was an automatic top 3 CF on defense who may not hit at all, but some have projected to hit for some power. Longo was another all world defense guy where there are widely differing opinions on his hit tool and power. Cusik was a giant fastball. I think Pache was our consistent number 1 prospect.

I really like Lango and I wanted to keep him. I was hoping he'd be ready in 2024 to pair with Wild Bill.

Contreras I was higher on his defense than most on the board, I thought he could be average. What I have been way wrong on is his bat. I thought he was a really good hitter for a catcher. But I thought it was silly to talk about him hitting well enough to play any other position. He's been DH on this team. Glad to be wrong on that!

If Contreras keeps hitting there is a decent chance that the Contreras brothers will be at the ASG together.

I not only agree, I said so at the time. Dude's EVs were sick in limited time last year, even if his top-line stats didn't show it. He's actually hitting the ball less hard this season, but his approach has further refined. He's also improved a lot as a defender, and is actually pretty athletic.

I think Langeliers will end up being a good MLB catcher, too; but Contreras is a really nice asset, who I think suffered from some prospect-fatigue because he'd been in the system so long.

Side note, but does anyone know how much the Braves signed Contreras for as an international free agent? I've been searching but all I can find is they signed him in February 2015.
