Around the Majors - 2022 Version

Orioles are a game out in the WC. Unbelievable.

I'm sure the O's fans are excited, but they are probably a bit puzzled at the same time with the front office's decision to sell more than buy at the deadline. They are ahead of schedule by a year or so, but they've got a fantastic prospect pipeline so good things may be in store.

I don't know if they lucky or not, but I do know the braves better win today if they want any shot at the east.

Yes, today is pretty much make or break as far as the East goes. The Mets are not going to collapse, and the Braves are not likely to go on another 14-game winning streak or play at a .750 rate for a month-long stretch.

From June 1st to August 1st the Braves played a soft schedule for the most part and made hay. Now they are stepping up to playing teams with records and those 7-3 ten-game stretches will become 6-4 or 5-5 stretches. That still should be good enough for a playoff ticket but you never know. Stub your toe against teams like the Marlins next week and they could find themselves outside looking in.

Luckily for us this week, the Padres have had to play the Dodgers, and the Dodgers remain the Padres' daddy. 7-2 against them and have outscored them 51-18. Lol. Braves need to handle their business in Boston and Miami. Mets play the Phillies next weekend, so if we don't do well in Miami, we're losing ground to one of the two.

We have won three series against teams with winning records during this two-month stretch (counting the Giants who have since fallen way off). We caught the Cardinals at a really good time when they couldn't score runs to save their lives. We've now lost four series against teams with winning records over this same stretch, and we split the two-game series with the Phillies. We have seven series left against teams with winning records (two with Mets, two with Phillies, one each with Houston, St. Louis, and Seattle), so those will likely determine whether we finish with 95-100 wins or 90 wins.

Like us and everybody else the Mets will lose several games they should have won and against bad teams. We’ll still be right there for the division at the end of the season.

Food for thought...

In 2019, I correctly said the braves issued a death blow to the nats in the division race in July with a resounding braves series win. And while the braves did win the east, the nats won the WS.

I feel like the Mets have pretty much got this wrapped up, but that doesn't guarantee postseason success.

Everyone understands this except you, apparently.

Fangraphs playoff odds are interesting...

We're considered a lock to make playoffs, 97.1%

Mets are at 92.1% to win division. They're now the favorite at 17.3% to win WS

Phillies are at 75% to get in playoffs.

Dodgers are 2nd highest to win WS at 16.8%

Orioles only at 3.3% to get in playoffs despite being 2 games out

Gonna check at my local casino to see if their odds match this. If i can get dodgers at better odds than Mets, I'm biting

Phillies have passed padres in WC standings

Interesting team. Can't field and shaky bullpen, but if Harper comes back and can actually play, that team could really pound the ball. I've seen beer league teams with better athleticism, but they will likely put up (and also give up) a ton of runs.

Cubs GM says they are going to release Jason Heyward after the season. He is currently on the IL, expected out for the season, but will be allowed to stay in the clubhouse.

Why say it this early even if it's your plan?

Yeah, weird. And why do it anyway? You’re going to be rebuilding for a while, and he only has one more year left on his deal. If nothing else, he could be a good leader for the young players. And, maybe by some non-minor miracle he has a good season next year, you can flip him for some lotto tickets at the deadline.

This might be a situation where Heyward asked for his release though.

The padres losing 5 straight and only 1 game ahead of brewers for 3rd WC is just the thing I needed to see after a rough week of braves' baseball

You have to remember this is nothing but a game played by grown man. We all have gotten irritated with the team and gotten angry on occasion. However, you take it to a level that I just don't understand. You need to learn to relax and realize this isn't important enough to get this upset about.

I vent to you guys, but I'm out having fun at the same time. I'll be at the beach this weekend, and I'll probably throw a fit over some random k while I'm soaking up rays
