AskCoppy Live from last night's Social Media Night

I agree...or have hoped the same thing. I was thinking there's been some sort of injury that has affected him or the lumps at the big league level has made him try and change who he is as a pitcher. It's odd.

If it is mechanical, then it might take a bit longer to get straightened out because I am not sure the AAA pitching coach knows Blair either. (Sims situation).. Matter of fact, I am not sure the AAA pitching coach knows anything really.

The interesting question I'm really surprised no one asked...

"Is there any chance the Braves are interested in Lourdes Gourriel?"

I can't imagine he'd have answered nearly as forthrightly as he did many of the other questions, but I'd have loved to see how Coppy reacted to the question. Yes, it's nitpicking, but saying "we're not going down that road anytime soon" doesn't convince me that they're out on him. That seemed to me to be much more in the context of older Cuban free-agents after the Olivera debacle. Completely speculation (of course), but could a pursuit of Lourdes be a part of the reason that Julio's so untouchable? Most of the reports I've seen consistently note that Lourdes won't need much more seasoning. If he has a similar upside as a Bregman/Benintendi/Moncada, wouldn't we be much better off keeping Julio if you could be in a position to promote Swanson, Albies, and Lourdes sometime in 2017?

I would be absolutely shocked if the Astros don't end up signing him.

Quite sure they'll do all they can - just would like to see Coppy's reaction and body language if asked the question since he's relatively easy to read. Certainly wasn't hard to read between the lines every time he was asked about Maitan.

Brother Gourriel is not that great of a prospect... Nowhere near the ceiling of the 3 you mentioned.

Something just got off track with Blair. You don't go from no hitting AAA, to not being able to get out of the 2nd inning at the MLB level. I don't buy he "just isn't good" quite yet.

I have some thoughts on this. I was behind home plate for Blair's start in San Diego last month. He was nibbling. Off the plate, off the plate, off the plate...then come in with a 3-0 or 3-1 meatball. Nobody fishing for his breaking ball, either. Nothing on the inside part of the plate. He didn't trust his stuff.

The one pitch that was camera-ready was his change, so that's a start. But he did not have the confidence he needed to pitch in the major leagues.

I think it's a confidence issue. He's a pitch to contact, here it is hit it kind of pitcher. If he's nibbling and trying to strike guys out he's going to be serving up some meatballs behind in the count. The good news is the changeup being effective. That's a lot harder to teach.
