Why bother?

Maybe just to see the look on Fredi's face trying to figure out where to put Aoki, Markakis, and Toscano in the lineup.

A little of this over here, a little of that over there, who? Mark os a o k cano i akis? I hear that Cano guy is really good and can really hit, and we got him for nothing! Oh wait, what should I do, Marco plays second as well. Are we a o k? I think so, but where's akis, is that Kris, he no longer here? He can really pitch it. Or is it the other Kris, I wanna play with Anna, is she safe? NO NO tos not a o k.

Following the Heyward and Upton trades and Johnson, Callaspo, Toscano, and Grilli signings we still have ~$17 million (assuming Hale stretches out and is sent to Gwinnett to stay a starter and Bethancourt catches with Toscano replacing Gattis in LF when Christian needs a breather) to spend before matching last year's payroll. Really can't fathom we're headed that way, but if everybody's hedging on offering Shields a fifth year it at least begs the question of whether Hart would offer him 5/$90 million and trade Minor and Gattis for offensive prospects that will be ready to step in by 2017.

Again I don't imagine that's remotely the case, but it's an option nevertheless.

Not to mention that Fried should be ready in 2017 and would replace Minor as the second lefty starter.

Unless another big trade happens (outside of Gattis) I really think the Braves feel they could compete next year for a wild card. If you put Aoki at the top of the lineup then it gets somewhat interesting. You then have a lot of guys that make contact and can defend to go along with a potentially excellent pitching roster. Next year should be mildly entertaining which is a huge upgrade from last year.

And Jenkins, Sims, and Hursh.

Just to speculate a little further, if Grilli and Johnson were in fact brought in to mentor Simmons, Shreve, and Vizcaino (as Wagner was for Kimbrel, Venters, and O'Flaherty) and Kimbrel was also dangled for offense that could make some sense. If Texas would indeed be as interested in backing up the truck for a Kimbrel/Gattis deal as others have speculated, could Hart expect a return of something like Profar, Mazara, Rua, Williams, and Thompson if he'd trade them both in the same deal?

Off...I really don't want to trade Kimbrel anymore as he already showed a willingless to take less than market but thats a tough trade to passup. That basically gives the Braves a top 5 farm system to go along with some excellent young talent on the major league roster. I think you would have to pull the trigger on that deal.

Also, don't forget about Grosser. Obviously, he is really far away but everything you read about this kid is lights out. He is hte guy to watch in the farm this year if you ask me. Well him and Albies.

Hart said they want a backup C, and a 5th starter veteran type with the rest of the money.

Im not sure what the record will be but depending who the 5th SP is, the pitching could keep them in most games.

If a few players do better than expected, who knows.

If they can deal Gattis, Aoki would be an ideal signing.

Aoki would be an ideal signing now and keep Gattis behind the plate for now. But our FO doesn't seem interested in more ideal solutions.

Gattis sucks defensively and gets hurt too much in the NL, he needs to be dealt to an AL roster.

Gattis does not suck behind the plate. He is adequate. It just doens't maximize his value to be in the NL. Some team will pay up to get a cheap 30+ HR player.

But right now there is nothing imminent in the works. And he's far more likely to be injured flailing around in left.

Based off what?

LF is probably the easiest position to play in terms of health.

Catcher is extremely demanding on the body.
