Big change for tonight, GDT 5/10

I don’t agree with Snitker like ever but sending Luke Jackson right back out there tonight was a good move. Damn, he was pitching mad and that’s the only way he’ll learn!

Acuna with monster shot, 466" with exit vel of 112 MPH to straight away CF.

Guess we'll see Acuna in lead off slot for awhile to come.

So the solution to get JD more PAs with men on base was to make it so Acuna gets fewer PAs with men on base.

Brilliant!!

Just watched the replay of Acuna’s homer. Both Chip and Joe insinuated that the reason Acuna hit that homer was because he was in the leadoff spot.

I’m not sure if I can take this stupidity this year. I hope this Joe stint is temporary.

Im not giving up on Newk in the rotation. Leave him in the pen all year for sure but he should be given an opportunity to win a starting spot in ST next year.

I still think they should use him for more than one inning but still out of the pen.

I think the pen fits him mentally. He’s the anti soroka. He just wants to grip it and rip it.

he can obviously go multiple innings

but he had pitched the night before and multiple RHHs were due up in the 9th

He had pitched 4 innings the past week. He was fine to go another. He also doesn’t have noticeable platoon splits. Jackson worked out great last night but Newk was fine going another inning and saving Jackson for today.

it's not so much number of innings as pitching consecutive days...there is research on effectiveness of relievers by days of rest...it is a thing

plus the RHHs coming up in the 9th

Whitey Herzog's rule-of-thumb was: Never more than three days in a row and never more than three days rest for relief pitchers. One can't hold to that fast-and-true with 7 men in the pen on the rest part of the equation, but you have to give your high-leverage guys sufficient rest during a 162-game slog. Good to see this from Jackson. Quality arm that has never quite put it together.

PS--As the season wears on, Newcomb could become a very valuable piece provided his new-found control holds in place. In the era of essentially piggy-backing pitchers, Newcomb may be the kind of guy who can come in relatively early in the game and provide multiple innings. I'd keep him where he is for now and hope he can build on what appears to be pretty decent progress.
