Braves Acquire Russell, Bonifacio

Russell and Bonifacio for Caratini is a huge win. We get upgrades at two positions we need (while not huge upgrades, they are definitely upgrades, and that helps) for someone whom likely would not fit in our lineup with Gattis and Benthancourt ahead of him at C and Freddie locked in at 1B (assuming Caratini may switch to there down the road).

Nice move, especially considering it seemed like we may go without one.

Edit: My mistake, I forgot he was a 3B/C not a 1B/C ... either way, my point still stands. He was a long, long way out and I doubt this move will hurt us down the road.

As it's been mentioned, we got money in return, so the price for that was giving up a pretty good prospect. If money wasn't involved, I'm sure it would have been lesser prospects

The ole mediocre reliever and mediocre bench player trade. It's a classic and always very exciting.

Marginal value for marginal value. The Cubs win this trade imo, but Caratini is surplus for us.

both will be put on the active 25 man roster as soon as they can get to the west coast, I presume. Who goes? Pitcher should be easy, Shevre or Jaime? Probably Shreve.

I guess we can simply option Gosselin back to AAA to make room for EB. I rather pull the plug on Schafer but they probably won't.

Having a utility man like EB who can play both IF and OF could allow us to drop 2 position players and keep an extra pitcher.

I'd agree. Much more upside for Cubs....but I don't think we gave up much. Not sure he'd stick at C. And our future C is CB or Gattis. And we have depth at C.

Is Bonafacio as BJ replacement (not on the roster, but do we see him take significant starts)? Do we finally see Schafer dumped to make room?

Carantini is a much better catcher than Gattis and has world's more offensive upside than Bethancourt. He's in the mold of a Brian McCann Jorge Posado type catcher.

I have never read anything that indicates that. You may be right, but he's not at the level of prospect Max Ramirez was when he was traded. Caratini's value is contingent, much like Ramirez' was, on him being able to remain at C. That's a big question mark at this point.

Bonifacio could kill two birds with one stone in that he makes both Gosselin and Schafer expendable. One will have to be replaced, but I can also see them bringing up/acquiring someone who would be another bat off the bench.

Hope Venters comes back this season. He is our best hope for a lefty who can get some high leverage outs.

I like it sense we'll have Russel next season as well. Takes care of two problems. Lefty reliever need for this year and next.

Release Schafer, send Gosselin down and bring up Terdo, or acquire another quality bat during the waiver period.

I wouldn't be surprised if Bonafacio plays LF, Heyward to CF and J. Upton to RF late in the year/playoffs.
