Braves close to signing Callaspo

I like the move. He's a solid contact guy that can play 2B and 3B. He'll probably play a decent amount early on until Peraza is ready but I like it.

I was guessing he was going to cost 3.5 million, so I was in the ballpark. It's not the sexy signing, but the middle infield market is very dry. We have a utility guy who can help out at a couple different spots on the field. Well at least try to help out. I actually like this signing. Basically no risk involved.

Nah, I'm kidding. I think El Puerco is a good signing. Especially if he spends the offseason on The Biggest Loser.

I've got his at bat song picked out, but he will need to work up to it:

$3 mil could end up being a nice steal. Not every player is a star, 0 veterans making $3 mil are stars. He's a much *better option/gamble than Doumit was.

I dunno about that, his trajectory has the same downward slope Doumit's did. Maybe the new regime will actually succeed in getting these guys in shape. He'll need to lose 20 lbs to be a viable 2b but at 31 he surely could.

A cheap one year deal, with incentives. Nice for the budget and some upside over Pena but doesn't solve 3b. Also give us a RH bat to spell FF occasionally, unless he's trying to break Ripken's record.

Too bad Jean Jacques Cousteau isn't still alive. When Callapso hits a home run, Jean Jacques could have been the commentator saying "I was alone when he went deep."

I think CJ gets traded and Callaspo is the 3B from the start with Gosselin or Pastor at 2nd until Peraza is ready. They are saying 2B to try and not seem desperate to get rid of CJ.

I hope you're right. HATED that extension the second I saw it. I just don't see how we can move him. Who wants him?

If the rangers would part with a Odor/Profar/Gallo + a top 10 pitching prospect ready this year or next + OF prospect in their top 25 + CJ's salary for Gattis + Minor? Is that good for us?

I wonder what Ass dribble Cabrera is asking for. He could fill the same role as Callaspo, plus play SS. A better hitter and younger too.

Alberto Callaspo will play a lot of third base this spring.
The assumption was that Callaspo would be the Braves' regular second baseman, but the club wants to keep their options open. If Callaspo and Chris Johnson end up sharing the third base job, Phil Gosselin would likely be the favorite to start at second base. Of course, he would merely be a placeholder until top prospect Jose Peraza is ready for the big leagues.

Gosselin. Stole Fredi's heart away from Constanza and stole Stella!'s job. What a bastard.

I've mentally had Peterson pegged at 2B. I guess they are looking at the platoons everywhere. Callaspo/CJ and Gosselin/Peterson

Keep in mind that one of Gosselin/Peterson might not make the team since both could back-up at short. It likely depends on how things go this Spring Training for them and everyone else.

Agreed, at least one of Gosselin / Peterson is sure to make them team so we have a backup SS. I think Gosselin has a better chance of making the team than Jace if they only choose one (which is probably the case if KJ makes the team). Phil being RH will help his cause, and they also won't care about burning his service time in a part time role. They may want Jace to get everyday ABs at AAA to start the season so that can evaluate whether he's an everyday player.
