Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

This was my biggest issue in dealing Jason rather than extenting him. There aren't that many better options long-term to replace him, and the ones that are better bets likely won't become available. Same thing for Justin. Who are our future OFers if he's dealt? Unless we get a really nice OF prospect for him, or deal from our young pitching, I doubt we come across a better option.

It's probably a pipe dream, but I'm just going to hope that Seitzer can get some good work done with BJ, and BJ will really commit to getting better. If he can be reasonably productive, that might make it easier to extend Justin. Our outfield won't be the Up, Up and A-Hey many of us envisioned, but it could be solid enough. What teams interested in Justin have really good outfield prospects?

I have a huge man-crush on JUp, so I would love to see him extended. However, I love the Braves more, so he either needs to extend or be traded. It really is that simple.

That's the rub, who is going to trade a good OF prospect for 1 year of an OFer? If the guy is close/good enough to make Hart pull the trigger, why wouldn't the other team just play the young guy?

Exactly, I don't see us acquiring a better LT option than Upton. Good hitters are hard to develop or trade for; we have one in our possession so let's, uh, keep him maybe?

If it starts becoming clear teams aren't willing to meet the asking price, we should shift our focus to extending him the rest of the offseason and further explore trade options with Gattis.

Forget that. $27.5m. 7 years. Right now. Blow him out of the water. Tell him you want him. Use Uggla's slot.

Why not?

Too much money and we need to pay other folks to fill out the roster. And his brother is bringing this organization down so he may not want to be a part of it when bro is gone.

I'd love to keep him, but can't see ATL paying 25+ million a year for a player.

We're gonna have to pay a few to compete. And we're a lot better at developing inexpensive, cost-controlled pitching than we are hitting. And there's a lot of inflation, and as nsacpi points out, hitters are getting $9m/WAR and pitchers maybe $6m. That could change as the pendulum swings, but it's a hell of a lot easier to find hitting than pitching than hitting.

Bowden still thinks San Diego's in on Justin - says to expect a SP and 2B coming back. Ross would be the obvious SP (IMO), would personally prefer an OF to Gyorko or Spangenberg.

I could probably live with Ross and Liriano.

You'd have to sell me on either? Ross doesn't seem like anythign but a 3-4 guy?

Ross had the second-highest GB% in the game last season (one spot above King Felix).

Boston's brass appears happy to have traded Cespedes for Porcello (and has gone nuts signing groundball Pitchers across the board) - 2014 difference in numbers had Ross recording 8.5% more of his outs on the ground.

Awfully nice attribute when you're eventually going to have plus defenders up the middle in Simba and Peraza IMO.

Ross+ anything would be a great package for Upton. Under control through 2018, throws 93+, ~ k/9 of 9. I'd be a fan of Gyroko too, good buy low candidate who could bounce back.

Seeing all the **** that teams are getting in return I think we might be best served holding onto Justin and Gattis till the season starts. See what happens. If we tank then trade Justin mid season. Someone will get desperate enough and give us what we want. There's risk involved but there's also the upside of the team actually doing well. We weren't supposed to win the division in 2013. No one considered the Royals world series contenders going into last year.

Not a fan of Ross. By the time Braves will be ready to compete, Ross will be exiting his prime and becoming expensive. He's a decent enough pitcher, but I'd rather have a younger, cheaper, higher upside arm with more yrs of control.

I'm with you on that! The only two guys they have that would remotely interest me are Ross and Cashner. However, Ross will be towards the end of his prime years and Cashner comes with serious arm issues in the past.

I don't understand the desire to trade our remaining scarce bats for more pitching.

We need to trust that we have enough top end pitching with Julio, Wood and Miller and fill that fifth slot with someone cost-controlled and look to improve the offense.

I have no "desire" to trade Justin or Gattis without landing a haul in return - I've stated many times that I'd rather extend him UNLESS the brass could make him understand that renting him to Seattle or another team for this season would substantially improve the club for the long run and that we have every intention of paying him market value to come back.

That said, I'm a realist (and think Hart & Company are as well) and do think that they've quietly had at least preliminary discussions with Justin's representatives about whether there's any chance of working out an extension that would satisfy him and allow the organization to field a serious contender in 2017. If there's no common ground, Hart wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't seek out the best deal possible to move toward that goal (much like the Heyward situation). Justin took "being shopped" personally before we traded for him, and I'm quite sure that Hart, JS, Cox, and Coppy wouldn't make the same mistake Towers did if they thought there was a chance we'll be able to hold onto him.
