Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

He said he was open to it, but won't negotiate after ST starts.
I haven't read anything that suggests Justin wouldn't have signed an extension before FA.

You don't see it, but you should smell it. Hold your breath seeing if he signs long term with SD.

This is public speak from agents . His job is to get the most for his client and this is a good way to do so. It makes Justin look good. Could be zero truth and all bets are that he hits FA.

Most players wait their whole careers to get to FA during their prime years. No way are players going to give that up when they are only a year away from it. It makes no sense from their perspectives.

In no way does that mean you shouldn't at least discuss it. Try to sell guys like Upton that the franchise, moving to a new park, will be built around him and a couple others.

I agree. No reason for Heywood or Upton to extent at a discount since they're already set for life.

Even a sizeable discount would be 20 million a year.

Is or isn't our payroll going to get higher? You could backload the deal and you supposedly will have money continuing to come off the books. I think very easily one of the two could have been retained. But the front office didn't want to. So now we ask what's next.

People think payroll will get raised simply because we are getting a new stadium. The crap product the Braves are going into 2015 should definitely deter fans attending. I hope the team loses money because they are a poorly run franchise and need a complete revamp.

Just better people in charge.

It sounds like us trading Justin to the Padres has set them up to trade a package including Myers to Philly for Hamels (see MLBTR for details).

The main difference so far in the 2015 team compared to the 2014 team is the change from Justin and Jason to Nick and Christian (since Evan will just move from catcher to left field, at least so far). Steamer projects a drop in WAR of 5.6 which would drop our win total from 79 to around 73 or 74. I'd say that feels about right at this point.

So you are hoping we suck? Gee what a terrific fan you are.

This is exactly the problem that I have with using WAR (or other Stats) to predict a teams performance in the future. A lot of things went into that 79 win season. To suggest that you can predict next years perfomance with last years ignores those events. Will they have the same injuries? Will managers make the same decisions? Some guys will outperform the numbers, and others will disappoint.

I can see it a little more for individual players, because there are fewer variables, but for teams, the potential variations become so great that I am not convinced that predictions based on previous years are really all that valuable.

i am looking forward to seeing who performs better than expected. I predict there will be several surprises.

Hammels, Pence and Lincecum have recently signed deals while on the doorstep of free agency. I believe Homer Bailey is another one.
