Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

As has been said. Markakis is not the same type of hitter as either Uggla or BJ. He will be much more consistent. The angst about his contract is really puzzling. $11M is good money, but with the inflation we are seeing right now, by the fourth year it will not be anything that will move the needle to stop the Braves from doing what they need to do.

I have little doubt that Markakis will be a solid, if unspectacular contributor, and allow the Braves to look elswhere for and develop the stars. You need your non-stars to be solid, and he will provide that.

Some of the bitterness on here is over the top.

The bitterness and negativity makes you wonder if any of these guys are Braves fans. Maybe they have rough lives and vent here rather than at home. But it gets depressing to come here. When ANY deal goes down, you can guarantee all of the Debbie Downers come out to play.

I disagree that the posters you are referencing aren't Brave fans. I think the fact that they are so passionate about their club is the reason why they are arguing against the deal. I don't agree with them but its clear they are fans because if they weren't they wouldn't post anything.

Hardly the case. In fact many of the people being "debbie downers" were the more optimistic of our chances going into next season before the offseason started. The issue is the FO has not made a spectacular move yet. OUr offseason moves are as follows.

1. Released Venters - inevitable, though I'm curious why him so much earlier than the non-tenders. Roster reasons? But why not do the same with Medlen?

2. Traded Wren for Quintana - Terrible trade. Granted odds are neither player amounts to anything but I think Kyle may have been a bench player. I don't think QUintana The lone positive for QUintana is he's young, but he's got a career 6.4 K/9 to pair with a 4.8 BB/9. That's just not acceptable.

3. Traded TLS for Viz - Did not love this trade in the context of other moves. If our goal is to rebuild then this makes total sense, add someone who could be our next setup man or closer, if it's to be competitve now by selective trading we traded our current starting 2B and the only platoon partner option.

4. Heyward trade = Still can't believe that's all we got for Heyward and Walden. If Miller was under control for 5 or 6 years I'd be happier, but basically we got another Mike Minor. WOOOO

5. Offered Jim Johnson a major league deal - How did they do this? Johnson was an absolute gascan last year. I know the Braves are banking on a fluke but wait before you sign guys like this if they want major league deals.

6. Markakis - And this is the one that really screws the pooch for me offensively. Let's pretend the Braves goal is to be competitive while shedding Jason and Justin. Say we get Justin for Walker. What they're basically hedging their bets on is Markakis, Bethancourt, Walker, Miller, and Johnson will beat Heyward, Justin, Walden ,and whomever we may have added in FA or by trading Gattis. Or even better, trading Bethancourt.

I'm not liking the direction the Braves are moving. I sure as hell hope they're way smarter than me and every move they make is the right one, but so far there's so much to leave me cringing.

*slits wrists*

I think some folks are overly bitter, but it's extremely frustrating that we and our front office keep talking about having young talent, and we traded a very good young player just entering his prime because we assumed, yes, assumed he'd cost too much. And now we're talking about trading another very good young player coming into his prime. And a lot of people are choosing to ignore that we will have enough money coming off the books in the next year or two to be able to have tried to negotiate a deal with either. Sure, with the number of teams interested in Upton, we should get a killing in return. But we've made enough bad trades over the years for us to be concerned. It's still the first week of December, so a lot will likely happen over the next two months. I'm alright with Markakis as a role player, and given the inflating market, I don't think it's an awful deal. But if we're not getting serious offensive talent back in these deals, we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Doesn't matter how many Shelby Millers you acquire; you have to score runs to win.

What are you disagreeing with? I said that it makes you wonder if they are. I didn't say they aren't.

Yet you would have had a **** fit in January of 2013 if the Braves would have traded Minor for 1 year of Justin Upton.

Think you meant Beltran?

JUp was a Brave in 2013, you high?

Jesus God, stab me in the neck with a fork. What a bunch of ****ing idiots. Why are they allowed to be in charge?

Actually, the trades are generally all right. If you'd told Frank, "Now Frank, trade all you want, but under no circumstances are you allowed to sign free agents," he'd probably still have a job and we'd be neck and neck with the Nats.

Orioles, Rangers, and Padres among the teams still involved in the trade market for Braves outfielder Justin Upton.

Would anybody here be interested in Manny Machado?

Even with the injuries, I would love Machado. It's a risky trade, but worth it in my opinion. I don't know that they'd do it. I actually think we end up pulling something off with the Rangers. It just makes sense.

Haha, I deleted that after thinking about it for a second.

I don't know if they would move him, either, but if they were amenable I would make that trade in a heartbeat.

hahah it's okay! I figured it was kind of a no-brainer, but with the injuries, It is a legit question. Imagine a lineup with him in it, it has promise to be pretty incredible.

I just think we go either the Rangers or Mariner with Justin and I could see the Orioles or Astros with Gattis.

I'd try to get that 3B from Texas.

Pads/O's dont interest me much.

The trades are alright if you're going back and adding what you've lost. If people want to somehow say Markakis and Heyward are close offensively, whatever. Who's close to Justin that we can get after we trade him?

We arent getting Machado, down year, injured but hes pretty much untouchable.
