Braves donate Justin Upton to Padres for prospects

@Joelsherman1
Jace Peterson, 1 of 4 players #Braves received from #Padres for J.Upton, is going to be given chance to win Atl 2b job in spring training

Keith Law PRIOR to 2014, Padres top 10:

3 - Fried

6 - D. Petersen

11 - J. Petersen

Padres 9th best system overall.

Obviously things change over the course of a year, but that sounds okay. Not great, but a realistic return for a 1 year rental.

And the Braves got a good wildcard in Mallex Smith as well

#Braves continue to listen on Gattis. But plan right now — unless overwhelmed — is that he hits cleanup and plays LF

#Padres have renovated roster, but execs from other teams say #athletics #nationals #braves all do well in hauls got from SD

Okay, after I got done sobbing I put on my rose colored glasses and started reading more about the players we got in return. There is a clear focus to move towards contact hitters who can work the count and get on base.

Mallex Smith - I really like this kid. Stole 88 bases this year, 40+ at 2 different levels! One thing I like to see from prospects are players that get better as they move up the ladder which Smith has done. He looks like more of a pure leadoff hitter than Peraza and I really love the idea of topping the lineup with 2 base stealers. It affects the game in so many ways that I think are under appreciated. I think even if they have a lower OBP their speed makes the times they are on base more valuable. I also think great pitching and being able to play small ball is a great recipe for playoff success. I look forward to a starting lineup with Smith/Peraza/Freeman at the top in the future. Smith has maintained 11% or better walk rate at every level and has a K% under 20 at every level. Thats a very good sign. He could also be a plus defender if he improves his routes in center and I think that will come with more experience. Mallex keeps hand written notes of every pitcher he faces even in A ball which I think tells us how committed he is and I like that.

Jace Peterson - Another prospect with 10+ BB% at evey level at topped out at 16.7K%. Should be a good defender at 2B, average defender at SS and I think can play 3B too. Looks La Stella but slightly better in every way. I think he can be an average player with a decent OBP and thats pretty valuable when they are cheap. I hope he gets a full year in the majors.

Dustin Peterson - I guess our scouts liked him. We bought low on him and I will give him atleast this year before writing him off.

Max Fried - Not very happy that he wont even pitch till late in the season. No chance he is ready by 2017. Thats pretty concerning as the centerpiece in a trade thats supposed to help us get back to winning in 2017. I understand the farm system was bad but is the goal to have a good ML team or a good farm system?

Oakland unloaded some players that could've fixed our offense. I wish Hart would've gone after them instead of this Mukaki Rebuild.

My favorite Padres fan reaction

"Hey guys remember when the entire outfield was occupied by 4th OFs ? Seems like it was just yesterday........ oh wait it was"

Team OBP may be .300, but we are gonna run, run, run till they either tag us or we score.

Doesn't it seem crazy to bank so much on a system-wide focus on speed when we are perhaps the worst organization when it comes to baserunning? Every good baserunner who comes here takes a step or two backward.

Don't worry we got Rocco Baldelli as an instructor in the system now.
