Braves Draft Pick Thread

Btw, the AJC article about last night's first round action indicated we would have taken Chavis if he had dropped to us. Once he was taken, the next guy on our draft board was Ortiz. But the Rangers snagged him two picks before us. Davidson was next.

Baseball America's state-by-state breakdown lists Davidson as No.4 in North Carolina, which is no disgrace because Rodon, Trea Turner and Hoffman were 1-3.

Povse is ranked No. 8 in the state.

Mac Marshall is probably telling teams to not draft him because he isn't signing. He will go to LSU, play for 3 years, and be a top 10 pick like Aaron Nola.

Keep in mind that the Braves spent their final 10 draft picks each of the last two years on "unsignable" players. They (of course) never signed any of them, but it gives them a steal on the odds that any of them change their mind. Would not be shocked to see Marshall drafted in the 30s.

I wonder if Dylan Cease has told teams to not draft him and that he's going on to Vanderbilt, or if his arm injury has dropped him? He was considered a lock for the 1st round at one point.

Vandy's class may take a hit. Vanderbilt signed Touki Toussant, Justus Sheffield, Cody Reed, and Dylan Cease this year. The first three were all taken in the top 2 rounds.

Someone mentioned Cody Johnson earlier. Out of curiosity, I googled him to see how he was doing. Sadly, I'm not even sure he's playing ball this year, after getting released from three clubs last year -- the Yankees and TWO INDEPENDENT LEAGUE TEAMS. That's gotta be a blow to the poor kid's last shred of hope.

Let me channel Bill Shanks. Stats don't matter, you gotta give him time to develop. I don't care if scouts say he can't make consistant contact he hit .300 and slugged .600 at Danville!

I think the thing with Marshall is someone will take him late and throw all of their remaining bonus allocation at him.

Sobotka was injured and didn't pitch all year. Stress fracture in his back. Is working his way back into shape. Worked out for scouts two weeks ago and hit 92-94 with his fastball.

Latest thing I saw was he was a projected top 60 pick before the injury. 6'6 hitting 95-96 at last healthy reading with good reviews on his slider.

BA had him listed post injury #115

I saw similar discussion. Likely first day pick if he hadn't been injured.

From BA:

It has been a bad week for pitching injuries. Earlier this week, it was revealed that Rice ace Jordan Stephens (Tommy John surgery) and Indiana closer Ryan Halstead (torn ACL) would have season-ending surgeries. Saturday, Baseball America learned that South Carolina-Upstate righthander Chad Sobotka, the No. 36 college prospect for the 2014 draft, is likely to miss the season with a back injury. He will not be able to begin a throwing program until April or May, making it unlikely that the junior will be able to pitch this spring.

A lanky 6-foot-6 righty with projection remaining in his frame, Sobotka generated some buzz last summer in the Cape Cod League, where he ran his fastball up to 95-96 mph and showed a promising slider. He is still learning to repeat his delivery and refine his command, but his upside is tantalizing. But it looks like he’ll have to wait a little longer to show scouts he has harnessed his potential.
