Braves Draft Pick Thread

So was Cody Johnson!

Yeah. Always some counter examples. But if taking birth date into consideration helped us decide on all three of Johnson, Heyward and Freeman, then I'd have to say we should keep taking it into consideration.

The Braves did this with Steve Janas this past year. Tall, long, lanky pitcher with a projectible body and projectible velocity.

Chris Diaz LHP University of Miami is our fifth round pick.

After going undrafted out of high school, Diaz broke out during his sophomore year at Miami. He became the Hurricanes ace and earned a spot on the U.S. national team last summer. Diaz primarily relies on his sinker, which sits around 90 mph with heavy life. He mixes in a slurvy slider and a changeup. He throws a lot of strikes and comes right after hitters with his fastball. Diaz pitched out of the bullpen with the national team and could move quickly in the Minor Leagues if he returned there. But with his feel for pitching and three offerings that have a chance to be at least average, he could develop into a Major League starter.

I'm liking what I'm seeing thus far.

I don't think either Marshall or Bukauskas gets drafted today. I don't know how much money can be tossed at a guy drafted after Round 10, but my guess is some team will take guys like these, save up all their extra top ten round allocation, add it to what they can spend, and make a last ditch effort to get them before college starts.

Was Gilmartin a sinker ball pitcher? I can't remember.

Hmm. Gilmartin's ground ball rate has not been that good in the minors. I do remember him pitching for the minor league kids against the big leaguers and his changeup seemed to be his best pitch.
