Braves Draft Pick Thread

They are allowed to exceed the overall signing money pool by 5% I believe so if tgey don't go over slot for anyone else I think they would be really close to that 5%.

The 5% will more than take care of it. I have backed off the draft a bit since the new rules went in place, but this 5% leeway rule is just stupid. Put a cap in place if there's going to be a cap and make everyone live by it.

At this point I have to go by the name. Caleb Dirks sounds like a baseball player.

Dirks is in BA's Top 500 and ranked as a late-2nd day guy on another service. So at least there's something indicating something.

Both Dirks and the previously-drafted Beech project as relief pitchers. Beech is a former college football player who went to Shelton State after playing some football at West Alabama. Scouting reports say Beech is very athletic, but extremely raw.

MLB had a scouting report

Perritt has helped lead Liberty to postseason play, both by roaming center field and by closing out games on the mound. While he has good speed and plays a good outfield, he’s likely to make a living as a relief pitcher at the next level. Perritt has touched the mid-90s with his fastball, and while his breaking ball has improved, it’s still a bit slurvy and will need to be tightened up in pro ball. He also throws a below-average changeup, but he may not need that if he sticks in a short-relief role. There could be more in the tank when Perritt focuses on pitching only, and that athleticism will only help him on the mound in the future.

The 18th round has been a major raid on remaining Georgia talent before the Braves even pick.

Two Godfreys drafted as center fielders. Are they brothers? The younger one seems to be a pitcher.

Get a load of the scouting report on No. 21, Jake Godfrey. Apologies if I am repeating something.

Godfrey's future has changed significantly since the start of the season. He entered the year as the consensus top prospect in the state of Illinois, a possible pick in the top three rounds who likely would be signed away from his commitment to Notre Dame. But he has regressed this spring, leaving his Draft status more uncertain, and he'll now attend Louisiana State if he goes to college. On the showcase circuit before his senior season, Godfrey showed the makings of three plus pitches. He worked at 89-93 mph with good angle on his fastball, threw a true downer curveball in the upper 70s and exhibited nice fade on his changeup. He also made strides with his ability to locate his pitches on both sides of the plate. Godfrey hasn't looked like the same guy as a senior, however. He'll still touch 93 mph, but he doesn't hold his velocity or command his fastball, which also has lacked life. His secondary pitches haven't been as sharp, and he has relied too much on his curve at times.

Padres draft Johnny Baseball, uh, Manziel in the 28th round, No. 837 overall. He's a SS.

FINALLY

The Braves go for a local:

Tucker Baca stood out as a loose, projectable left-hander at last year’s showcases, but wasn’t quite as sharp this spring. At his best, his fastball reaches 92 mph, but, more often, he pitches around 90 mph. His fastball has good sinking action, allowing him to generate a lot of groundballs. His secondary stuff is still developing, but both his curveball and changeup have the potential to be at least average offerings. He throws from a low three-quarters arm slot and doesn’t always repeat his delivery well. His command suffers as a result, but he has the potential to have average control. Baca earns praise for his poise and feel for the game. He is committed to Arizona State.

Bowed after Round #20. Some interesting picks in the last 20. Here are some notes.

Rico has covered #21 Illinois high school RHP Jake Godfrey.

#22 Sean Godfey was in the BA Top 500. Hit .333 with 9 HRs in 252 PAs.

I was hoping for the ghost of Arthur Godfrey with pick #23. Played one helluva ukelele.

Braves drafted #26 Trevor Sprowl (Alabama utility man) in the 33rd round in 2013. Funny thing is I don't see him on the Alabama roster or stat sheet. Sprowl's dad is the head coach at Shelton State (AL).

#29 Dezon Cole has some buzz about him. 5-11 RHP/SS. Appears Braves drafted him as a RHP. Braves drafted another Michigan high school product (LHP/OF Johnny Slater) in the 31st round last year. Slater honored his college commitment to the University of Michigan. Cole is a Central Michigan commit.

#39 Grayson Byrd is the son of former Brave Paul Byrd. Grayson has committed to LSU, his father's alma mater.
