BRAVES FINAL DRAFT SIGNING BOARD: Backstrom on board!

Milligan sounds a lot better when you know he transferred from Oklahoma State and has already signed with Southern Miss. So somebody likes him.

This heavy JUCO strategy has me feeling like it’s mid-2000s.

One of the flaws of the current draft system. Tenth round is almost exclusively college seniors, who will mostly receive doody for a bonus, enabling teams to allocate it elsewhere. Braves minor league all-star shortstop Delgado signed for all of a $1,000 bonus in 2017.

Except the Braves just went with a freshman JUCO player in the tenth. In fact, I don’t think the drafted a single senior in the usual “senior sign” section of the draft.

New market inefficiency? Or just a short-term blip reflecting the need to deepen the lower-levels sans IFA influx?

Correction: looks like those numbers were from last year, and MGCCC just hasn’t updated their website. This article, from November 2018, claims he signed with Dallas Baptist University for the 2019 college season; however it looks like he stayed at MGCCC for whatever reason.

Can someone hold me and whisper different analytics stats in my ear so I'll feel better about this draft.

At least it looks like the Braves did indeed have a concrete if idiosyncratic plan. Heavy on JUCO and draft-eligible sophomores in the usual cheapo senior-sign rounds. Vines sounds like a spin-rate guy. Parker has crazy power and a solid idea at the plate, *hopefully* (I’m just basing that off his batting lines the past two years). Harris and Paolini look like the longer-term upside plays. Milligan seems to have an interesting offensive profile, especially if he can stick defensively up-the-middle(?). Seven bats versus four arms, if Harris is indeed going to try hitting initially.

Targeting guys who are or who have transferred down a level seems like a theme.

Guys can get lost in playing time shuffle, but seems odd.

I know at USM we were viewing Milligan as Wallner's replacement for the best bat on our team. We REALLY needed him to get to campus because we are extremely thin at catcher now that Cole Donaldson graduated. Milligan was a solid pick in the 9th.

Kalich (4th round) is first officially announced signing. By the player himself.

Turns out that 28th round pick Ben Thompson is a Kiwi! Yes, that means he was born in New Zealand.

14th round pick Jared Johnson tells his local TV that he is signing with the Braves this weekend. Was Mississippi State commitment.

Count 6th rounder Tanner Gordon of Indiana among those all-in. His dad told local media that Braves "made a good offer" relative to the sixth round pick.
