The Atlanta Braves have entered the Yasmany Tomas sweepstakes as a dark horse.

The Braves are slated to watch Tomas and his exploits in coming days, according to sources.

They join a big field eyeing on the free-agent Cuban slugger. The Phillies, Padres and Giants have been seen as the most aggressive pursuers of the outfielder/third baseman, but there's been a lot of talk about a mystery team winning his services in recent days.

From MLBTR:

The Phillies are increasingly concerned with the defensive part of the equation on Tomas, reports MLB.com’s Paul Hagen. The club is “backing off” somewhat, despite generally being viewed as the front-runner to land him. Philly sees Tomas more as a DH, per Hagen, but could be more intrigued if his asking price begins to creep down. Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com echoes those thoughts (Twitter links). He says the team believes in Tomas’s bat, but is worried about both his defense and conditioning and is not interested in guaranteeing him nine figures.

MLBTR predicts he signs for 7/105 ($15M per year). Definitely doable, and at 24 years old he is the type of talent this organization needs to acquire if it hopes to be competitive by 2017.

He makes a lot of sense being a young power bat we could control through the new stadium. I just can't see us competing in the bidding way. But I think in a perfect world we could sign Tomas then spin off Upton to Seattle for Walker.

Be still my heart if that happened. Sick rotation....nice young bat. Sign me up. We won't get into a bidding war...but if we don't get Lester and trade Upton...me thinks anything can happen.

All power, crappy defense. Is he really that much better than Gattis? Or at least, that much better that we sound spend about 10 times more on him? Wouldn't that money be better spent on J-Up or Lester?

I don't know much about him.

but has he so much power?

I also think that his SO rate is too high.

15 mio p.a. is way too much, imo.

I don't trust the opinion of the guy who signed Delmon Young in 2013 who is a DH who can't hit. Tomas isn't a DH yet. Maybe in 5-10 years.

He does have a phat ass (as does Justin Upton).

Nothing that Phil Falco can't tone up with some yoga and HIT, though.

At 24 you can rip that baby weight off in about 3 months.

Hmm, have you seen what JUp looked like at 23? This guys looks more like a young Prince Fielder than a young JUp. I won't pretend that I can judge how a player's physique will hold up over the course of a career, but not all guys are built like Heyward.
