Or just kept Smith and declined his team option. Which is what Houston did. I think the only way this has a big hit on us if we get near luxury tax territory, reading about it.
 
Based on the numbers in this article:

The Astros paid Will Smith $5.6 million ($4.6 million remaining 2022 contract plus $1 million buyout)

The Braves paid Odorizzi $12.29 million ($1.79 million remaining 2022 contract, plus 500k for reaching 100 innings, plus $10 million towards 2023 salary)

So, the final tally is, the Braves took on $6.69 million extra for two putrid months of Odorizzi.

I liked the move at the time. Oh well. I guess think of it as money off the books next year!

There's alot of money off the books next year. Morton, TDA, McHugh, Pina, Rosario, Yates (some have team options), and Ozuna's deal would only have 1 year left.
 
Yeah that’s pretty bad sending 10 million. That 2 million saved could go towards paying down Rosario to go to somewhere else.

AA’s honestly does not have the best track record when it comes to free agents. Thankfully most of this bad money is short term.
 
DOB says Braves are booking the $10m spent on Odo against this last seasons budget which is odd accounting. Either way, that money is going to come into play when considering the luxury tax.

I honestly just don’t understand what type of spending team the Braves are now. Early 2000’s Braves would have traded Fried away for a minor league catcher to cover the Odo dead money.

If they are trying to budget it into last years then they are getting ready to spend some money.

Agreed. It’s a creative way to clear space.

My guess is Odorizzi said he was opting in so we traded him. And going to Texas, I almost wonder if the Braves approached him with this in mind

Apparently, Odo opted in when we traded for him. But we must have alot of money to spend if the 10 million is going into the 22 budget and not 23's.
 
DoB is very adamant we will not be a luxury tax team, citing sources inside the Braves organization who handle the budget.

Right. But that's only important if you're pushing luxury tax. They won't be. It will show up in their "official" payroll in some places, but doesn't mean anything to team for their own bookkeeping. Doesn't affect what they have to spend this year one bit.

You can tell me it's not accurate, or I can go with what I'm told by the people actually setting the payroll who say they won't be a luxury tax team. But if you know more than them about their plans, by all means, forge ahead.
