Braves sign Colon

I like it. I still hope we talk about a bigger name like Archer with Blair/Wisler and Albies as the centerpiece... Archer has a ton of control left and 2nd base is really deep in the system all the sudden.

Blair/Wisler, Albies isnt getting Archer.

Would have to throw in Newcomb, Fried, Jenkins or some bigger names.

hmmm...i was ok with dickey...colon less so...some of it is the contract..1-2 years plus an option is better...gives you some upside re trade value

Solid move. I think we still go after that young controllable starter to team with Julio/Folty. Then we wait for the kids to tell us they're ready so we can flip the old guys.

The approach we're taking is perfect. At this point, I'd just as soon add another vet on a one year deal and use some of our mid-rotation / back-rotation prospects to upgrade our position player situation.

If this is the approach, probably crosses off Wieters.

A short-term deal for a catcher makes some sense.

Wow that is the Braves prized possession this winter. All this budget available and they are throwing 12.5 at a 80 year old pitcher.

Still have plenty of room to add $$$. Colon pushes current payroll to ~$97,550,000 before renewals. They should push it to around $104-$105 million.

I'd almost bet d'Arnaud's brought back now - with the flexibility he provides, he'd free up room to carry an extra Catcher just to handle Dickey if they choose to do so.

Of course, that could mean Ruiz starts in Gwinnett too.

What's also awesome about signing these guys is they're perfect trade fodder if we fall out of it by midseason. They don't require a large financial commitment from the team trading for them, these guys are nearing the ends of their careers and so would probably jump at a trade to a contender, and both could fetch nice pieces in return.

If we are in contention, the stability they add to the rotation down the stretch will be really beneficial.

There's no real downside to these moves. I didn't expect we'd try to trade for Archer or Gray. We're committed to growing our own starters. Neither of these guys will block our young guns but both are stable enough that we shouldn't have to throw a bunch of unready young pitchers into the fray.

Wieters isn't old enough nor is his career about to be over. No sense in signing him then. Wieters will be in this team in 5-6 years.

I probably would have preferred signing just one veteran starter, guaranteeing Wisler a rotation spot for a make-or-break year and letting one of the fringey guys compete for the fifth spot. But it's hard to complain about this too much.

Exactly. A lot of the talk has been about not blocking the pitching prospects, and I agree that's valuable. But it's also just as valuable that we aren't tying up money in 2018 and beyond when we could be really competitive.

Assuming last year's offense in the second half only sees a small regression and the bullpen is a plus....are we an 85 win team next year?

Other than 3B I'm not sure where we upgrade with a trade. I'd actually like to give a garcia/ruiz platoon a chance.

I still think 80 wins is probably where we end, at least with what we have now, but I could see it. If the offense stays the same as the second half, who really knows.
