Braves sign Dickey

I think getting Dickey really takes away from the need to get Colon or another similar pitcher. I like the idea of getting an innings eater, but if we get another sp it needs to be a clear upgrade.

I do like that Colon eats innings, but the main attraction for me is he's the 2nd best FA pitcher on the market. I'm not opposed to Rich Hill at the right price, but the durability concerns are big-league.

Colon would be a clear upgrade over the plethora of meh/crap that started games for the Braves in 2016.

Fair enough. I mainly meant in the form of a long term upgrade of more significant magnitude.

That I would agree with but, imo, it's not the time to make that move. I would make that move when the team is on the cusp of contention and needs an extra piece to get them there. I like the move of getting 2 innings eaters who can provide stability in the rotation and have them on short deals to bridge the gap those in the minors. I think that's the plan they want to go with.

Anyone still holding out hope that the Braves acquire an impact SP (or any position) still isn't paying attention. How many times does Coppy have to say it, and how many Kemp/Dickey acquisitions do the Braves have to make before it sinks in?

They have made it crystal clear what the plan is to construct the 2017 roster.

I have maintained all along that the starters we add would be underwhelming. I am in no hurry to trade our prospects. Dickey is actually very intriguing. Knuckle ballers don't age like traditional pitchers. I wouldn't be surprised if he does pretty good back in the NL. That option could be a big deal if he has a good year.

Colon is at the top of my list of FA pitchers. Its probably unlikely we're anywhere near the top of his list though.

They'd be interested in signing him, just so that they wouldn't have to face him. However, it wouldn't signal that they're really serious about contending yet either, as is the case with this Dickey deal.

Not a bad deal. While nobody else throws like him, a veteran who can help out the kids.

Best Braves knuckle ball pitcher since Phil Niekro?:icon_biggrin:

Colon eats a lot of ****.

Actually, you're hearing what you want to hear. He's left the door open for meaningful acquisitions, while acknowledging that we're probably a year away from that.

I think the thought would go something like this - we are pointed toward 2018, but (for instance) the Rays are offering Archer for a stiff-but-manageable prospect cost, maybe three real good ones. Now, you'd prefer to develop your ace, and if you're in acquisition mode for that last piece or two to put you in the hunt, you hope there might be a deal to be made in a year when it is your optimal time. But you don't know that. And here's Archer, controllable for five years, right now. Do you pull the trigger?

I pull it and don't look back.

No doubt!

Actually, Dickey is unique among knuckleballers because he throws it 10 mph harder than Niekro and Wakefield did.

I like it, I think it's a real nice pickup.
