Braves sign Travis D’Arnaud

So far both FG and MLBTR have been pretty spot on with their contract projections. Both had Darn at 2/14, and it looks like the Braves kicked in some extra change to get him signed quickly.

So if AA sign the best relievers available the fastest he can and now he don’t wait longer to sign a catcher probably we will sign Donaldson or Moustakas soon enough.

The 3b market is likely waiting on Rendon to sign since JD and Mous will be Plan B/C for almost every team bidding on Rendon.

Just asking how i supposed to feel? I know this guy had a good year last year but do he make us a better team?

Realistically we are going to get about the same production at catcher as last season.

Improvement in the pen could be worth an extra 5 wins.

I think that's basically the plan. To hold steady at most positions and book some extra wins from the pen. Having Ender healthy will help, but you gotta figure there will be a significant injury at another position.

What’s funny is that all this pages don’t have any rumors from the Braves. Only that we are planning to sign Bumgarner and probably they just make that.

2019 OPS+ for Flowers and McCann 86 each. OPS+ for TAD 107. Significant improvement IMO

D'Arnaud 1.6 fWAR in 103 games in 2019

McCann 1.1 fWAR in 85 games

Maybe half a win extra. Maybe.

The improvement is coming from the pen. We are largely holding serve elsewhere.

Not to mention that the Lairdership that isn't quantified with Mac Attack managing the staff.

exactly

calling a game is one of the dark arts that has mostly escaped quantification, but Mac was one of the best at it...he's gonna follow David Ross' footsteps as a manager someday...hopefully he is in spring training working with Contreras and Lango.

Some improvement may also come internally. Acuna and Albies are potential monsters. Ender should hopefully be healthier. Soroka and Fried might take another step. Hopefully Folty is more 2018 than 2019. That’s the main advantage of a young core.

As surprising as the Smith signing was, the overall plan appears to be supplementing the homegrown core with enough FA talent to project for 90+ wins and a shot at the playoffs. Buying or selling at the deadline will be determined by contention status of that particular season.

Yeah...further breakout from young players is likely to be the other source of improvement...could be a 100 win team if we can hold serve at third

It’s probably important for folks to realize that while the Braves won 97 games, they were among the luckiest teams in baseball in terms of higher order winning percentages. Those metrics pegged the Braves as a true talent 90-92 win team in 2019.

Their 28-16 record in 1 run games in incredibly unlikely to be sustained in 2020. When that record regresses to something closer to .500, the win total will suffer as a result.
