I wish the Braves were closer to be honest. I don't know total years discussed (it was over 8) but the AAV was $27-28m. Total dollars were closer to 260m. The Braves weren't north of 200. Casey also discussed an opt-out. End of story- shake hands, part ways cordially.
- 11/14/14: Close is valuing Heyward closer to $200m over a long term deal.
- 11/14/14: Apparently they are apart on both years and AAV by a "significant margin"-- I have no details as to what that means... [...] Casey has a good case for Jason at or slightly above $200
THE TRADE THAT RENT OUR HEARTS ASUNDER
- early, 11/18/14: Casey was adamant that any reasonable offer needs to start above $220
- late, 11/18/14: Jason would not have accepted anything less than $220-240m
- today: I don't know total years discussed (it was over 8) but the AAV was $27-28m. Total dollars were closer to 260m.
I hate to keep bugging you with these questions (said in a particularly apologetic Lieutenant Columbo tone, with hand wearily rubbing my forehead) but I'm still trying to understant the gap that might have existed between the two parties. I'm looking at Freeman's contract and seeing that he is going to be paid 21M per year during the free agent years (2017-2021) part of his contract. My understanting is that the Braves valued Heyward higher than Freeman. So maybe they were at 22-23 AAV for the free agent years? So the gap was maybe 4 M in terms of AAV. The opt out is obviously a big potential issue. And years too. I'm obsessing with those details because something just nags at me a little. I think it has to do with the fact that I can't help but feel that if there was enough will on both sides they could have found something that worked for both, maybe 25M/year for 8 years without any opt out.
The other part of all this that would perhaps clear things up a little would be when those discussions took place. After the 2012 season (6.3 WAR, .814 OPS) Jason's bargaining position would have been very strong. If those discussions took place then I could see his agent being more aggressive in his position. 2013 was not such a good year (broken jaw, 3.4 WAR, .776 OPS). So if the discussions took place then (around the time Freeman, Kimbrel, etc got extented) then I would have thought asking for 26-27M over the free agent years would be more questionable. And this off-season, it seems we can all agree there were no talks, just Hart's poorly chosen words about "assuming" things.
I sent you PM before my credibility was questioned on here and I'm happy to continue our discourse over PM but I'm done sharing anything on these forums. Good riddance.
Thank you for pulling this
We have Jason Heyward saying no contract talks happened int he last year. And we have a random (literally - his name is random) poster saying he wanted absurd amounts of money that continues to increase by the day.
His name is ramadon.
Lol. Sue me for being ambiguous.
Jason was NEVER present at any meeting with Casey Close -- last year or this offseason. Stanton's rumored (and then signed) contract is a precedent Casey chose to cling to (and why wouldn't he). Obviously no one - including Casey - valued Jason at the same figure as Stanton, but 260m seemed reasonable given where salary escalation is going to Casey. That wasn;'t the same eval the Braves FO had. The end result was 260+ for his camp; and we were under 200. Those are the final numbers-- which resulted in no offer.
I could give a damn whether you or anyone else chooses to believe me. I could care less, in fact. Have fun with your continued bitchfest. It's not worth my time.
Twas a joke

Gross.
Or if they signed him. It is not a fact that he wouldn't take $22 mil, or that they wanted to go there with him.
John Hart has done nothing to earn my trust.
lol Heyward wanted 27-28 mil? I don't even believe that, for a second.
Can only laugh now
Because no one is getting paid that much.
