Braves to acquire Brandon Phillips

It could be a good deal involving the pieces and money. He may not be an on base machine, but a good defender and some pop.... never really wanted him, but he's a local boy, a big name, and helps sell tickets. Hate that for S-Rod.... was expecting a breakout year and hopefully the surgery won't effect his progress.

As long as there aren't any prospects of note, and we aren't paying anything, I don't see how this can be anything but a slam dunk. Adds some excitement in the lineup pop wise, not terrible speed anymore... still solid defense as someone pointed out last year was an anomaly. I'm guessing he waved the NTC because he knows he can play every day now pretty much. I love the deal if the rumors of the crappy prospects being dealt are true. And I love Albies getting more time. The youth on this team will explode in 2018-2019

Does anyone besides me find it ironic that we are taking a veteran so that someone can make room for Pereza?

We gave him a no trade clause to get him to waive his 10-5 rights so we won't be flipping him at the deadline or when SRod returns.

If the Braves didn't give up anyone in their top 25-30 then its a really good deal. Otherwise, I'm not a fan.

Multiple baseball sources: Reds to receive 27-year-old LHP Andrew McKirahan and 29-year-old RHP Carlos Portuondo.

Excellent - This was a nobrainer considering they gave up nothind and the Reds are rumored to be paying most of the deal.

That works. The only minor complaint I have is that we gave him a no-trade clause. That kind of sucks, but I'd still rather have Phillips than those two.

No-Trade kind of sucks but its nice to have a competent everyday second baseman out there. Maybe we get lucky and he has a fluky season (1.5 WAR).

Solid move, if the players rumored going to Cincinnati are correct. Slide Phillips into the 5/6 hole of the lineup and if he produces in the 1st half he can be moved to a contender at the deadline.

Very nice. Don't love extending his no-trade, but that's also what allowed us to acquire him for almost nothing. Good move in light of the SRod situation.

Damn. Bill Shanks is now saying that Rodriguez might miss the whole season. What a bummer.

Since Phillips waived his no trade, are we able to trade him when Rodriguez is back in a few months? Not that he'd return much, but just trying to find a silver lining.

Yes. He only had a no trade clause because he was a 10/5 player (10 years in the league and 5 with one team). Him getting traded to the Braves obviously nullifies the last part of that.

edit: seems we gave him a no trade clause for the year. doesn't really matter.

McKirahan has not pitched since 2015, when he was 1-0, 5.93.

Portuondo appeared in 17 games for Miss. and Gwinnett last year, going 2-1, 3.63. Before that, he had not pitched since 2013?

This is my definition of less than nothing.
