Braves trade David Hale and Gus Schlosser for...

Hale walked over 4 per 9 and struck out less than 5 per 9. Those numbers are atrocious. It's not like the guy is super young or has great raw stuff where you can project a much better performance down the road.

Chris is Dan's son, so that's a huge negative right there. Hate to lose Hale. Not sure about this one, but it feels off.

He went to Dartmouth. Had to bring in another Ivy Leaguer to replace Hale.

Jeez. Dartmouth AND Dan O'Dowd's kid? Definitely don't want to hang out with that O'Dude.

Does anyone else think the team over estimated Gattis' skills as a replacement for McCann ??

Cost Wren his job ??

I think it's more likely that people in the organization are re-thinking Bethancourt because Gattis was playing the outfield mostly only a year before last. Plus Bethancourt has long been considered the future at catcher. Now it is more like he is getting a shot but maybe just for a year or two.

No. The Uggla and B. J. signings and complete inability to improve the farm system cost Wren his job.

I was all about Bethancourt until September. His strong suit was supposedly defense and he looked slow and lazy on breaking pitches. His bat , whatever promise he might have shown when Gattis was DL'ed was all but invisible in September. He too is getting beyond prospect age

I like the way they are systematically dismantling the 2014 team. Both at the Major League level and AAA.

Any one else recall the game where Tehran was visibly upset with Gattis ??
A lot went wrong after that

I get that Hale is not anything special but I felt he was a guy that proved he could pitch at the major league level and arguably in a major league rotation. He was cheap and under control for many years and we trade him for an A ball catcher? Sure, this kid might end up being good but I feel there should have been a little more value for him.

I don't really have much of an opinion on this one. Hale was serviceable and cheap. If we lack this much confidence in CB we should have kept Gattis around. I guess Hart found out Hale was posting negative things on this forum.

Hale doesn't stink? Based on what? His peripherals were terrible. He wasn't highly regarded in scouting reports.

Hale isn't the same pitcher he was in the minors, he has added the sinker and gets good movement on his pitches. That is why he had such impressive numbers starting last season (check his splits). Plus even Fredi admitted to overusing him in the bullpen at times last year and that clearly skewed his bullpen numbers.

The organization obviously didn't feel he could arguably pitch in a rotation - the evidence is there given the Wandy and Stults signings. He'd have been #5 on the list of competitors for that spot behind those two, Foltynewicz, and Banuelos.

Likely came down to the fact that Avilan gives us another left-handed option in the pen and that our scouts thought Briceno was better than any offers we got for Avilan. With Vizcaino, Cunniff, and Jaime on the 40-Man Roster and Kohn and Cornely behind them there wasn't much need for a right-hander that doesn't strike people out in the pen.

I guess if you can't sell low on Minor you gotta sell low on Hale. Maybe we'll sell low on Minor too and keep the trend alive. That said, I agree that it's possible this A-ball catcher could turn into a nice piece down the road. But even those high on him (such as Mcdaniel) note that is a "long-shot."

I guess I'll trust the scouts that this catcher is pretty good. I just thought Hale had value and if he was given a shot in the rotation this year that value could have gotten exponentially higher.

Briceno is an intriguing pickup. He's a young catching prospect with above average power. He's viewed as a future everyday catcher with above average defense as well. Solid insurance for CB. Hale i've always liked but anytime you can turn a fringe 5th starter into a potential everyday player you do it.

It would be a big mistake to trade Minor right now. I hope the front office isn't even contemplating that. Plus, he was the last first round pick of Roy Clark so I would have to believe he still has strong backing in the organization.

All prospects are long-shots. There are 750 players on the planet that get MLB roster spots in a given year.
