We had Hudson, Medlen, Teheran, Minor, Maholm with Beachy expected and Wood on the radar.
That's 7 potential options before the season.
Why would we need to have him as well? These injuries just happened.
And we hadn't used less than 8 starters in a season since Maddux pitched for us. Used 10 last year, I believe. It was obvious that depth was going to be an issue. Wood has lost both games he has pitched for us. Hudson is done for the season. Maholm is out for a bit. Teheran is going to be pitching more than ever before. The bullpen has been decimated. Beachy is going to be called up early because of injuries. Wood is going to have to stay in the rotation until Maholm returns (or a trade is made). And all that is with the rotation staying pretty healthy throughout the first half (we got lucky). It is a disaster that could've been avoided.

Heyward for Peavy is a terrible deal for us. They would do it in a heartbeat.

Santana vs Peavy. Depends on how much you weight this season's performance relative to other recent ones.
Peavy has a 3.69 x-FIP this year. About the same as for his career.
Santana has a 3.60 x-FIP this year, significantly better than recent seasons or his career number of 4.26.
Based on this I would expect Peavy to be the better pitcher during the rest of this season.
Of course there are other considerations, such as how much it would cost to acquire each one and the fact Peavy is under contract for next year. But based purely upon what to expect going forward the rest of this year and even next year, I would take Peavy.
Adding Lohse to the discussion, he has an xFIP of 3.91 this year, similar to his 2011 and 2012 numbers. I would prefer Peavy over Lohse too if the only consideration is expected performance the rest of this year and 2014.

I think Peavy is probably the best option. We are able to take on the salary, which means we can give up lesser prospects. I say he is probably the best option because we don't know what the White Sox will want in return. But I think a fair deal would involve sending a prospect of the caliber of Terdoslavich or Martin. Or a package of lesser prospects. If they want more then we should move on.

The thinking with Peavy is because the money is so high the prospect cost will be less. Also, I believe Peavy can reject trades, which limits big payroll teams from taking on his contract. So Peavy is almost a perfect fit for us.

Btw I think Wren was shrewd to keep some money in reserve. By my calculation we are 5-7M below the 95M payroll McGuirk mentioned early this season. In recent seasons, Wren had to bargain (by giving up better prospects) with other teams to pay some of the salary of the players they were trading. He has a lot more flexibility this year. Until Hudson's injury, it didn't look like he would need it. But these kinds of things happen often enough to make it worth it to keep something in reserve.
Yeah but if we signed Lohse, do you want use to have a 6 man rotation?
Medlen wouldn't be going back to the pen because of his amazing finish to last season.
Teheran wouldn't go to the pen because they felt he would be ready to start. Same for Minor.

If we had Lohse, Teheran would've been two starts deep on this season (most likely). We wouldn't have to concern ourselves with his innings (and he would most likely be pitching his best heading into the playoffs). And we wouldn't have to trade for Peavy or anyone else. We also could have Wood pitch a game or three to give Beachy the time he needs. No rushing.

I don't really see an excess of outfielders – I don't think Gattis is necessarily a great long-term LF option, and I don't necessarily trust that Schafer is capable of playing up to his 2013 levels over a full season – and moreover Heyward's still been valuable this year even if he hasn't yet hit at the levels we'd all like to see. Personally, I'd rather the Braves bet that Heyward will return to (or even improve upon) previously exhibited levels of production than sell-low on him to acquire Peavy.

Oh, yeah. Lohse would've been the best available option before the season. Now it is Peavy. Don't want to trade for Lohse.
