Maybe he can hit .300 but if he's a .300/.340/.420 hitter is that really that good?
There is a much higher degree of assumption that goes into defensive stats and you know that. Don't try to talk your way out of this one. Defensive stats are not facts. They are useful data that can be used but you cannot pass those along as facts.

Yeah, but even the purveyors of those defensive stats advise you to take them with a block of salt. They're not stats Zito, they're just numbers. I'll buy your hitting stuff, but those defensive stats don't pass any tests I know....and not even the people who make them up stand by them.

Thats about what I would expect Prado to hit if he was our 3B. Its more about not being bad than being good, it wouldnt be very easy to find someone to hit better playing 3B for less money than he will make. Even the greatest teams have role players, thats how I view CJ fitting into the team.

That just shows a lack of knowledge of statistics. If you don't believe in those stats then you don't believe in pretty much any stat. Cause they're all subjective in the most insane way. UZR doesn't claim to be perfect, but if UZR says Johnson is a bad defender, DRS says Johnson is a bad defender, then odds are he's a bad defender.
Let me just throw this out there. The extremes. The top 10 in UZR and the top 10 in Plus minus last 5 years, for DRS it's Brendan Ryan, Longoria, Beltre, Bourn, Pedroia, Heyward, Kinsler, Jackson, Gordon, Adrian Gonzalez. For UZR Longoria, Bourn, Heyward, Ryan, Beltre, Petroia, utley, Adrian Gonzalez, Hardy, Ichiro. Basically there are 2 outliers in the top 10. For the same thing with the bottom 10 in DRS Kemp, Weeks, Ibanez, Aramis, Uggla, Jeter, Fielder, SOriano Reyes, Howard for UZR Kemp, Fowler, Asdrubal Cabrera, Adam Jones, Ibanez, Uggla, Ethier, Markakis, Braun, Dye
So there's some arguements between the 2 but in general I think most would agree that guys like Kemp, Uggla, and Ibanez are all horrible defenders.

False. Some stats are better than others. Just because I question the correlation of UZR does not make me a flat earther. At some point these stats may be less erratic, but they aren't yet. Johnson is a decent third baseman, and nothing you say will change my mind. I watch him.
Also, you might want to remove "horrible" and "terrible" from your vocabulary. It doesn't help your arguments. Maybe if you shaded a little gray in there you'd get a little more buy in.

Those guys are pretty much universally regarded as horrible defenders by most.

Not trying to de-rail this thread, but does anybody else but me feel like thethe is our version of Chris Johnson?
thethe's putting up decent numbers at face value. Offensively, his numbers are up there. Defensively though, it's pretty mediocre. And like, it's a popular thing to love to hate CJ and make a sarcastic comment everytime he does something productive. With thethe everyone makes fun of his outlandish predictions of prematurely naming guys studs, or hyperbolically naming guys studs yet everyone kind of rallies around him at the end of the day.
When CJ gets hit after hit, I can only laugh and say wow he did it again. When I read through threads here and read thethe write "He's going to be a stud", It's almost like the same reaction.

You've got to try and pay your home grown guys, but what do you do when they take up 25% of your payroll? Can you still compete? It's a classic Mauer problem.

His slugging won't be that low. He's slugging .441 for his career now and it's rising pretty steadily. He's had one bad year - 2011 at Houston, of he'd be at .300/.340/450 right now.
