So forgetting his attitude, when do we consider another option for 3B?

Going into today, he's hitting .256/.274/.336. Walking in only 2% of his PAs and striking out in 25%. Of note, his .256 batting average is in spite of a .333 BABIP so he gets to keep his BABIP lord status.

What other option do we have? We traded the only 3B option above like A ball worth a damn last year in Francisco. We have no other options that to hope for him to start hitting. He shouldn't be this bad but he has had a season where he has been this bad.
 
BTW this is what our 3B options are doing in AAA and AA

Salcedo - 209/.284/.367 15 errors
Kubitza - .291/.395/.436 9 errors
Leonard - .245/.306/.273 1 error

Kubitza is the only one looking like any kind of option. He has a worrying high 27.9 K% considering he doesn't have much power.
 
I'm not sure why anyone is surprised that CJ isn't very good...the guy has hit into almost as many double plays (11) as he has extra base hits (13). Last year was a fluke, and we all knew he was due for major regression this season.

I'm also not sure why Wren felt the need to extend him. He would have been a strong non-tender candidate after this season, but now the team is stuck with him.

He signed a below market value contract. That's why Wren extended him. He can move him at his contract.
 
And to think there's still people that think after last year's fluke this guy should be on a team trying to contend. He's just terrible.

Johnson isn't close to this bad. He had one season below 100 wRC+ that was 2011 where he was at 81, he's currently at 68. His power is the lowest of his career, his BABIP is second lowest of his career.

If you compare his batted ball stats ot last year, the only thing that's a negative change is HR/FB he went from 10.9 to his current 4.4. His career is 10 so odds are he would move up.His patience numbers have some concern compared to last year, but if we give him his career BABIP and career HR/FB and that's it his line for this year would be

.274/.292/.384.

Not stellar by any stretch, but way better than his current line, and that's with a career low in BB% and high in K% if they normalize some he'll be back to being a solid not spectacular hitter. He obviously isn't what he was last year, but he's also obviously not what he is this year.
 
I have never been a fan of the good Lord BABIP. I was a proponent of El Juan before Chris's ridiculous tear last year obviated that discussion. But Zito is right. He's horrible right now—Vinny Castilla minus some power and walks, and plus the odd single, and horrible on D...but he will be better. The contract was team-friendly, and moveable. We don't have an internal option. Give FW some credit for not being a total moron there.

He would be fine if he was hitting his career average. Even his career average before last years fluky season. He is a solid starter at 3B. Contending teams don't have all stars at every position. Didn't the Giants win the world series with Gregor Blanco starting in a corner outfield spot.
 
Gonna move him for what though? .750 career OPs despite playing in homer parks and provides poor defense.

Certainly seems Wren bought last year.

Before last year his line was .276/.315/.430 with a 100 RC+. His war was 1.0, which ranked 41st among 3B in baseball.
 
Is that offense only? Because there aren't a whole lot of great hitting 3B anymore. I am nnot a big fan if WAR, more a fan of wOBA and yeah I know that won't show CJ in a great light either. When did we trade Francisco last year? I remember CJ didn't really go on a tear until after that trade. Is there any way to see his splits at the time of the trade? I don't think he was hittng RH pitching too well until after the trade.

If Wren bought last year he would have been paid way more. 3/23.5 or 4/32.5

Similar contracts signed this past offseason

Jason Vargas, Scott Feldman, Omar Infante, Carlos Ruiz, James Loney, Salty.

Not a single one of those players is exceptional. Vargas has a career 4.23 ERA, Feldman has a career 4.6 ERA, Ruiz is an old catcher who's bound to break downa t any point. Omar is a light hitting fairly consistent around 2 WAR player, Loney is almost the exact equal to johnson, terrible in the field, slightly above average for the league but below average for his position hitter who rarely cracks a 2 fWAR, Salty had one season of any substance similar to Johnson.
 
He will be better but will not be good. Still have no idea why we extended him when we could have gone year to year for the same money with option to non tender if he sucked. One of the most head scratching moves in Wren's tenure. Not a lengthy contract will be it's saving grace.

How would we have gone year to year? Sure next year. but after that he would have latched on for at least a 3/21 with someone else. Johnson hits for a high average.

Not even going to try to compare Johnson to 2 pitchers and 2 catchers. Infante is a better player though.
