Christian Bethancourt optioned to Gwinnett

unbelievably asinine comments about him. He's a .270 career minor league player. Regardless of what you say Gov, he hasn't been clueless. He's taken time to adjust and he's done it enough. If he hit .260 AND played good defense, I'd take him. He's struggling right now..and regressed, but I hope he can salvage the talent that he does have.

Not trying to be asinine, Deester. I think we get guilty of groupthink around here. I don't like the player. I didn't like Cahill either, didn't agree with the consensus position that it was ok to take a $5.5m flyer on him, and I said so. Other guys have some strong opinions about this guy or the other, and we need to give each other a little room to say so, rather than sitting in a circle and agreeing with each other.

Absolutely nothing asinine has been said... the only asinine sentiments in this thread are people who still think he can be a serviceable MLB player. 270 in the minors with zero other peripherals is absolute garbage. And you say "if" he played good defense... he does not. His defense was so overstated it is ridiculous.

Not taking one side or the other in this spat, but IF it's time to cut bait with Bethancourt given the limited opportunities he's had, isn't it time to send Folty to the pen for good at the very least?

eh, these are two totally different situations.

Just as overstated is the fact that he can't play defense. I don't think scouts, the front office really said, let's promote this guy because he has a terrific arm. He may not be serviceable in your opinion, my opinion is that he can be more. Will he be? At this point, my crystal ball is cloudy. Yours?

Absolutely agree Gov. Good post.

I don't think he will ever hit, but he still can be a good defensive player despite being lazy at times. If he can have a .650 OPS and play good defense, he has a shot in the majors.

You have to be joking... Folty has actually shown his potential. Bethancourt hasn't shown it at any level... And has had quite a bit more time in the Majors. You're better than this.

So now that you got that off your chest, you wanna tell us how really feel? :)

Well it's annoying when someone calls others asinine when the comments are reasonable and not at all asinine. I was fine talking level headed and actually discussing until the asinine statement was put out there for no reason.

Yeah, and Folty has more tools for success than Bethancourt does, namely his 98 MPH fastball. C-Beth really doesn't have any tool that suggests he will turn into an even average hitter.

Well, he came back with an apology of sorts. Let's give a little grace and continue to enjoy the season.

I really was dreading this season. Then I started to get curious, then intrigued. Now I'm almost fired up. We ought to be able to find three serviceable relievers, right?

I go back to the one game I really watched him. He went eight, I think, with total command and pure filth. Not time to send him down yet. It's time to see if you can move him from one great outing in four to one sorry outing in four.

Finding out whether Bethancourt is a major league serviceable backstop is far more important than figuring out if Folty is going to be a starter or a reliever. Folty has a good fastball, but it's not like he's a super prospect and there aren't a number of pitchers behind him that could replace him. We have nothing in terms of catchers and in a self described rebuilding year. It makes no sense to play a veteran scrub over a guy that you really need to find out what you have with him. You aren't going to find out much playing a guy every 4 days.

And for the crowd wanting to win, it's not like AJ is going to get more than maybe 1 win over Bethancourt over the course of 130 games.

I question whether AJ would be worth anymore, period.
I think the thing with Bethancourt is, he has to earn it. If they feel he's been lazy and sloppy and not giving it his all, he's not going to be handed the job. If his defense were really good and his bat was what it was, I think he'd have played more.
And again, there's the issue of who pitchers like throwing to, which is hard (impossible?) to quantify.

I don't know, he's been around quite a while so I imagine that yes, someone has. And teammates generally like him.

I don't know that anyone really likes AJ.

Ozzie Guillen- "If you play against him, you hate him. If you play with him, you hate him a little less."

Buehrle says, "Once Barrett hit him, I think the whole league wanted to give Barrett a pat on the back."

After he was hit in the groin by a foul ball during a spring training game, Pierzynski reportedly kneed trainer Stan Conte in the groin when Conte asked him how he felt.

He's been in the league how long? His reputation is what it is, but at this point that's all it is. Is he the best guy? Probably not.

The Conte thing is a total question mark. No one knows if it even happened, or what happened. So that's useless.

AJ was on two different teams for a long time. If he was so terrible, that probably doesn't happen.

He admitted to kneeing Conte.
