Ok, you tell me what Obama did about this in his 8 years. Democrats had the presidency and Congress for 2 years and failed to act. So am I supposed to vote for another Democrat who wil again fail to address the issue until its reelection time, then that Dem so ask to get re-elected so he can address the same issue he failed to address. Let's also not forget the 1994 crime bill cnn championed by the Clintons that has had the effect of releasing a dirty bomb on a major city.

Tell me about those DoJ reports in which they detail numerous crimes committed a daily basis by police. I actually read all of them. One crime for instance noted that a supervisor told a cop on patrol to disperse a group of black kids. When the co says they aren't doing anything criminal so he can't do anything the supervisor tell him to make it up. The DoJ official was sitting in the an car. No one was arrested. The whole report just asks cops nicely to stop breaking the law and cops promised to so better.

They are known as Antifa – short for anti-fascist – and they have become an often violent fixture at protests from Charlottesville, Va., to Seattle.

But while most visible when clashing with conservatives and police, they also reflect another uncivil war: the one pitting traditional liberals against more aggressive progressives.

The violence, however, is only the most obvious sign of an ideological sea change on left. Although the terms liberal and progressive are often used interchangeably, they mean very different things, said Harvey Silverglate, a liberal civil rights attorney in Boston and co-founder of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

Traditional liberals, who have long held sway in the Democratic Party, want to create “a kinder and gentler society, which is nonetheless fiercely devoted to providing civil liberties to all – including free speech as well as fair [due] process in criminal and disciplinary matters,” said Silverglate. The classic example is the ACLU’s effort in 1978 to allow Nazis to march in Skokie, Ill.

Progressives, he said, are committed to achieving their social and economic agenda “at whatever cost to civil liberties.”

They are more likely to support laws restricting “hate speech.” Many progressives – most notably those who have shut down speakers at Middlebury, Berkeley and other college campuses – argue that the First Amendment is a tool of oppression used by the privileged to brainwash the public. “The notion of freedom of speech is being co-opted by dominant social groups, distorted to serve their interests, and used to silence those who are oppressed and marginalized,” professors Kate Manne of Cornell and Jason Stanley of Yale wrote in the Chronicle of Higher Education.

In 2017 especially, the infractions have gotten smaller. For Allison Stanger, a political science professor at Middlebury College, simply arranging a debate – instead of demanding the speaker not be allowed to speak – resulted in an attack. For Bret Weinstein, a biology professor at Evergreen College, merely suggesting that it’s wrong to tell white students to leave campus resulted in threats against him and students patrolling the campus with baseball bats. The school had to be shut down for three days. (By comparison, the University of Texas shut down for just one day after an armed gunman opened fire on students in 1966.)

Why are Democrats losing in the heartland? Here are some ideas

The Democrats who gathered here for a day of fairly anguished strategizing about what they’d have to do to win back rural voters did not speak kindly of their own national leadership or reputation or behavior.

Over and over, during a seminar called “Winning Back the Heartland,” they bemoaned the condescending way some of their fellow Democrats talk about their fellow Midwesterners, particularly those who live in small towns.

Democratic pollster John Anzalone told the crowd that now, when he asks focus groups who Democrats stand for, instead of the longstanding answer “the middle class,” what he hears is “immigrants, refugees, gays and those who kneel.”

“This is more than white middle-aged men wanting to be the latest victims in America,” Anzalone said. “When you do these groups, you really get a sense of people, and they’re not racists, they’re not nativists. These aren’t mean people, folks.”

Entrepreneur Chad Troutwine, who grew up on a cattle ranch outside Kansas City, told the group that he splits his time between Kansas City and California, “and you can love both, but the divide has shifted” from North and South to coastal and not, “and as a Midwestern Democrat, I don’t always feel comfortable with that.”

When it’s the views on the coasts that set the agenda for Democrats in the middle of the country and the middle of the political spectrum, well, that’s why the Midwest is becoming ever-redder.

The seminar was sponsored by a think tank called New Democracy, founded by Will Marshall, who was a co-founder of the centrist “Third Way” Democratic Leadership Council that launched Bill Clinton. But this effort is not so much a group for centrists, though there were some in attendance. Instead, it’s dedicated to the idea that the one-size-fits-all imposition of coastal values onto the Democratic Party has doomed it to a minority status that was only masked by Obama’s success.

Democrats decided 16 months before the 2018 election how they would start winning races again. Gathered in a small Virginia town on a sweltering July day, Chuck Schumer, Nancy Pelosi and their lieutenants laid out a “Better Deal" agenda focused on middle-class jobs and higher wages — a vow, they said, that their party would never again waver from a laser-like focus on the economy.

Donald Trump makes some promises difficult to keep.

Just days later, the president declared on Twitter that transgender men and women were banned from the military. His action drew a swift rebuke from Democrats, who rose in unison to denounce the president over the newest front in a cultural — not economic — fight.

The pattern would repeat itself through the summer and into the fall. Whether it was his response to the Charlottesville white nationalist march or his condemnation of NFL players who knelt during the anthem to protest police brutality, Trump forced Democrats onto the battlefield of his choosing.

And if he keeps doing it now that the one-year countdown to Election Day 2018 has begun, it could very well mean Democrats are denied the chance to win back majorities in the House or hold onto their numbers in the Senate.

“As much as I’m appalled by the daily actions from the Oval Office, I have to admire the president’s ability to keep us talking about anything other than jobs and economic well-being,” said Democratic Rep. Jim Himes of Connecticut. “If we keep falling for that, we will pay a huge political cost.”

But my underlying premise that the Clinton-Sanders primary battle had revealed an unresolved ideological and political conflict at the heart of the Democratic coalition, which was not actually about Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, was substantially correct. It was flawed in one important way: I failed to perceive that the Democratic Party’s real problems ran much deeper than that.

Brazile's contention is that the party organization was being operated as a money-laundering front by its leading candidate, in roughly the same way Tony Soprano would run a bankrupt sporting-goods store. Perhaps even more important than those details, she portrays the Democratic Party as so financially and morally bankrupt, and so ideologically adrift, that it required a parasitic invasion by the Clinton campaign just to keep going. If any of that is accurate, then the intentions of the people involved are irrelevant. The entire enterprise was corrupt from top to bottom.

Point being, the Democratic Party’s corruption was, and is, systemic rather than specific. It wasn’t so much “OMG what do we do about the weird old socialist guy?”, although it’s clearly true that Sanders’ campaign caught party insiders by surprise and they weren't exactly thrilled about it. The moral implosion that Brazile describes was the tragic result of a bunch of more or less decent people with more or less honorable intentions struggling to deal with a long chain of unintended consequences stemming from decisions they hadn’t made.

Hillary Clinton’s bizarre defeat-in-victory was an event so unlikely it seems like a metaphor. So does the fact that the Democratic Party was so broke and so cynical it literally sold its soul for rent money. But those things happened. Until we face them honestly there will be no Resistance, no victory, no political renewal and no democracy.
 
If Democrats would avoid the culture war and identity politics we’d be ok. We need a moderate platform tending towards Democratic economic values that is responsible and realistic. We also need to get back to globalism and advocate for America being less confrontational and working for stronger relationships with international institutions.
