I agree with this...I do not like big name FAs. They are usually big names because they have peaked. Rare is a FA got 5-6 years in them at the current production.
I like using the market to our advantage though. Too big rumors I like.
1) Mouse to Milwakee....We trade for Shaw...say a Teheran, Demeritte for Shaw deal (3B covered for 3 years or until Riley is ready)
2) Yelich in a deal like ... Allard, Anderson, Waters deal (LF covered for 5 years). If you could add a Yelich/Realmuto for Allard, Anderson, Wentz, Waters, Pache (LF & C would be covered for years)
Sure you have to pay more this year (unless you could dump Suzuki & Markakis) and sacrifice some prospect depth, but you would be set from a roster perspective for 3 years waiting / hoping for growth.
Lineup all controlled for years and have not hit peak yet so growth should happen

I would do 5/20/20 for Cain right now
I was thinking something very similar. In fact, I think 5 20 20 is exactly what I proposed.
Then the next question becomes, does it make sense to sign Cain without also addressing 3B?
If they don’t fix 3B and make the team a fringe WC contender, does getting Cain at that value warrant taking on the extra risk of signing him a year before the team expects to contend?

obviously the payoff varies some but not a huge amount depending on where you are on the expected win curve...i tend to think you have to take them one step at a time...eg signing Frazier would not cause me to change my approach to Cain much...

I would like to sign Cain if his price is right but I am not interested in Moose or Frazier for third all things considered.

With the way the offseason is going, see any chance -or desire- that the Braves take a chance on Joey Bats or Cargo on a 1-2 year deal? Guess you could throw Gomez in that mix but really thinking about power hitting OF type.

Bautista is freaking awful and I want no part of him. I guess Cargo is a remote possibility. I wouldn't hate that signing
I don't think now is the time to invest in 30+ year olds who had a bad year and hope they get it going again. If we are doing anything during this offseason I would target someone like Cain on a back loaded deal or look to trade or someone like Yelich. Otherwise look at the deadline or next offseason.
On a one yr deal with an option yr I don't think that's a bad idea at all for guys like Bautista or Gonzalez both of whom are 10x better than Kemp in the field still as well.
Rather have Cain for sure. But if not Cain or Frazier on a backloaded deal, then I'd rather take a chance on Joey Bats or CarGo on a 1 year deal with a mutual option than sign journeyman guys like A-Jax or similar players. I want no part of Gomez either.

There are as many as eight teams that have shown interest in Nunez of late, including the Mets, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Giants, Braves, Brewers and Royals. (Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area recently suggested that a reunion with San Francisco wasn’t likely, implying that Nunez can receive superior offers elsewhere.)
